Trouble selecting fonts in the dropdown

Having issues with selecting fonts from the dropdown in PS 2018. I'll open up the font list, scroll to the font I want, and then try to select it. First it doesn't highlight the font I want and even if it does, when I click on it it just reverts back to the previous font without changing it. I also have any issue when I select a font that this little popup comes up next to the text on the canvas with selections for other characters. How can I fix not being able to select fonts and the issue with the other characters showing up in the 3 boxes?
