Unfortunately the suggested method for manually restoring my preferences seems to be unavailable, as there is no folder called AppData within Users/[user name]/

Does it work correctly? 

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.  

Is this somewhat of a random problem or is it the same specific files that you can't open? If it is only specific files, could they be corrupt? Do you have access to another computer where you could test open those files?

I created these files myself using the same laptop; I've edited, exported from them, resaved and reopened them many times with no problems - this issue has only arisen in the past week.

Definitely psd files, yep!

No worries. Are you sure the problem files are actually PSDs? Could they be something else with the wrong file extension? Just a wild stab in the dark.

Hi Michael, thanks for coming back. The same thing happens whether I double-click the files in Windows Explorer or go through the File menu in Photoshop.

Can you please provide specific details about how you are opening the files?
