Twain Driver Issue With Canon LiDE25 Scanner

I am running an older version of Photoshop - Version: 19.0 (32 Bit) with Windows 10 (64 Bit).

I have an older Canon LiDE25 Scanner that used to work fine with this version of Photoshop and Windows.

But recently, when I try and run the scanner in Photoshop from File > Import > LiDE25, I get the following error message in Photoshop:

I am guessing this started happening after a recent update of Windows 10 because nothing else has changed on my system.

The Twain driver file is called "Twain_32.8BA" and normally the Twain driver for this scanner needs to be installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\AdobeAdobe Photoshop CC 2018 (32 Bit)\Plug-ins for this scanner to work with Photoshop.

But after I got the above error message, I also went into the Windows folder and there was a folder called: C:\Windows\twain_32 and so I put a copy of the Twain driver file in there too. I also created the folder C:\Windows\TWAIN and put a copy of the Twain driver file in there too.

So now I have the the "Twain_32.8BA" file in 3 different folders and I still get the same error message in Photoshop when I try to uise the scanner.

If anyone knows how I can possibly fix this problem so that the scanner will work with Photoshop again, then I would greatly appreciate it.

I have several scanners that are over 10 years old, including an old Canon LiDE. They’re no longer supported in current OSs, but VueScan can drive them all. A potential catch with VueScan is that it’s paid commercial software, but for me it paid for itself years ago because I do a lot of scanning. (Although I use the old Canon the least because the LiDE is the slowest scanner I have…)

It might not be technically necessary to find a solution that works directly from inside Photoshop. That requires a driver and Photoshop plug-in that work with the scanner, work with Photoshop , and work under your current OS. For older scanners it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find software that meets all three of those criteria. VueScan works because they reverse-engineer the scanner driver while also keeping their app up to date with the latest operating systems, and also because they don’t have to worry about making it work from within Photoshop.

With older scanners I think that last point is important. Do you actually need to start scanning from within Photoshop itself? If you don’t, this problem is much easier to solve. You are then free to use any software (such as VueScan) which works with the scanner on the current OS, have that software save the scans into a folder of your choice, and when you’re done scanning you can just open the scans in Photoshop. VueScan has an External Editor option, so that when it’s done scanning it can send the scan to Photoshop itself. Either way, it means you don't actually have to start the scan from within Photoshop, and that eliminates the need for a Photoshop-compatible scanner driver or plug-in.

I like to run my ancient scanners using VueScan, with VueScan set to save scans into a certain folder. I then use either Adobe Lightroom Classic or Adobe Bridge to watch that folder, so that as new scans appear I see them show up in Lightroom or Bridge and instantly know whether they turned out OK or need to be rescanned. After the scanning session is done, if I do need to edit it with Photoshop, I just have Lightroom Classic or Bridge send the image to Photoshop.

I actually like that better than scanning from inside Photoshop, although I can understand how that might be convenient if you need to scan just one or two items.

I'm impressed that a 21 year old scanner ( which has stoped being supported years ago) even works.

I think the route for you is to use the WIN7  drivers.

https://canoncanada.custhelp.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/1007134/~/lide-25-scanner-driver-ver.-11.0.1.1a-%28windows-7-x64%2Fvista64%29

WIA is built into windows- is that an option for you?

THE FOLLOWING IS A 100% A.I. RESPONSE

The Canon CanoScan LiDE 25 is not officially supported on Windows 10 by Canon. However, the Windows 7 drivers may work with some limitations. Canon's website suggests using the Windows 7 drivers as a workaround. VueScan, a third-party software, offers drivers for the LiDE 25 on Windows 10 and can be used as an alternative.

Detailed Explanation:
  • Canon's Official Stance:
Canon does not provide drivers for the LiDE 25 specifically for Windows 10. Their official support ends with Windows 8.1.

  • Potential Workaround:
Canon's support documentation indicates the Windows 7 drivers might function on Windows 10, but with unknown limitations.

  • Using Windows 7 Drivers:
    1. Download the Windows 7 driver from Canon's website.

    2. Install the driver, potentially using compatibility mode if necessary.

    3. If it works, great! If not, you'll need to consider other options.

  • VueScan as an Alternative:
    • VueScan is a third-party software that provides drivers for various scanners, including the LiDE 25.

    • It can be used as a standalone scanning application or with other software like Photoshop.

    • VueScan offers features like multi-page PDF creation, color photo scanning, and automatic file naming.

  • Other Potential Solutions:
    • Compatibility Mode: Try installing the driver in compatibility mode for Windows 7 or even an earlier version like Windows XP.

    • Virtual Machine: If all else fails, you could try creating a virtual machine with an older version of Windows that is compatible with the scanner.

    • Phone Scanning: Consider using a scanning app on your smartphone as a simpler alternative.

Yes you can use and LIDE 25 with Win 10 and 11, ive just done it myself this weeekend

You need to 'manually' install the driver (find the driver, browse for the Windows 7 driver ver. lide25vst6411011aen)

Extract the files from the setup.exe and look for the folder CNQL25, and the files CNQL25.INF and CNQL25X.CAT

Select this and select the LIDE25 when prompted and it'll install the driver and Canon Scangear

Sorted, even works with Paint Shop Pro 7 from around 2001
