I have tried searching how to type text in a circle and everything tells me to use paths. When I make my circle shape using the elliptical marquee tool, there is no option to select paths? So how do I type text in a circle?

I choose dark black arrow to select path

Not the Selection tool (black arrow) tool, the Type tool (T):

  • Select the Ellipse tool
  • Choose Path on the Options Bar
  • Draw the ellipse
  • Select the Type tool
  • Hover over the path edge, and Alt click to type

convert your text to a smart object (right click the layer with text).  (afterwards it will no longer be editable as text.)

you can then use the transform tool to 'distort' your text.

i'll move you to the ps forum so you can get more expert help and possibly a better way to do that.

You need to use the shape tool and not the elliptical marquee tool. When you draw with the shape tool change the setting at the top to paths instead of shapes.

Once you have drawn your shape select the text tool and click on the line and you will be able to type along the path - you can change the base line so that the text appears inside the circle rather than on the outside of the circle.

abide:

  1. Draw the circle with the Ellipse tool
  2. Switch to the Type tool
  3. Hover over the path and Alt/Opt click.

Now you can type on the circular path.

That's the whole trouble. There isn't any path to select.

Hi I used the same option but even with Alt click, when I draw circle using Ellipse tool (not shape) but just circle. I choose dark black arrow to select path, it selects circle but it doesnot show that sin curve to type text along circular paath. I have Photoshop 7, today I will install CS6, may be it is the only option left

Hi dharams82296906 :

Step 5. Actually You Can Just Click On The Edge Of The Shape. No Need To Press Alt.

There are two tools for adding text in InDesign: the Type tool and the Type on a Path Tool:

Screenshot 2018-05-27 07.26.32.png

If you take the time to choose the Type on a Path Tool, you don't need to press Alt. If you use the Type tool as stated in my original answer, you do. Either option works—it comes down to user preferences.

Is there a way to invert the direction of the text? This works great if you want it all around or at the top of the circle, but I'd like it at

the bottom and using this method causes it to be read from right to left.

Hi Noturna, not sure if you have already found a way. You could try using the Path Selection Tool

QuirkyGidget_0-1587903727128.png

When you hover your cursor near the circle, it should change and look something like:

QuirkyGidget_1-1587903774771.png

Drag the cursor inside the circle, the text should now be at the bottom of the circle:

Thank you so much for your reply! Actually, no, I haven't found a way, simply gave up and kept the text at the top of the circle.

At first I wasn't getting your suggestion to work, but it finally did! Thanks so much!!! So simple, but I'd not thought about it.

Forgive me as I'm a newbie and couldn't find where to post a new message.

I'm desperately trying to type text on a circular path but as soon as I put the text cursor along the line and click, this happens....

Would anyone have an idea as to what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

My apologies. This is what I am now getting. Instead of one circle I get two, and the text doesn't flow around the outside.Textonpath.jpg
