Can you explain the process?
Ensure that you are copying actual content in the first place.

  • Select layer mask.
  • Alt + click on layer mask so you see it in the image area.
  • Paste copied content.
  • Alt + click on layer mask to go back to normal mode.

    Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?
