Unable to move layer [Mac]

I've read everything I can find but still cannot move layers. Created a new document sized to accept two files I want to project together. New files are stacked and labeled Layer 1 and 2 above the background. Using move tool, auto-select is unchecked, not in Quick mask mode. Latest updates, most recent Mac OS. I'm returning to Photoshop after many years away. There's a lot that's new, so I expect it's simple, but I'm baffled.

Thank you all for your help. The problem turns out to be hardware based, an old and feeble Intel graphics card.

Looks like you have the Red channel selected for possibly both layers.

 

Go to the Channels panel and click on RGB for both layers, then see if you can move them.

    I can't see anything wrong from your screen shot, but I am not sure exactly what you are trying to do? 

    You do have Auto Select checked, so with the move tool selected, the layer under the cursor will atomatically be selected whether that is what you want or not.

    You have both Layers 1 and 2 selected in the screen shot, so both layers would be moved.  Those layers aoppear to be aligned with each other, and when you havee two layers under the cursor location, and Auto Select checked, the layer higher up the stack is the one that will be selected and moved.

     

    Is this happening with just the one document, or in all documents including new ones?

    Can you give us more detail and describe your workflow?  Like you say, it's probably something simple, but you are absolutely OK to ask questions regardless of how complicated the answer might be.

      Hi Thanks for pitching in.

      I did uncheck Auto-Select, but nothing changed. All I'm trying to do is position the two layers side by side. I could not drag and droip the two images to the background, had to copy and paste, they came in centered and I could not move them. They show two possible effects on iPhone Pro: normal photo and portrait. I'l flatten the image and project it to explain portrait mode and a shallow depth of field to a small group as part of a workshop. As I said, it should be simple.

      Here's another thing to try: you have a selection marquee. This shouldn't matter, but try deselecting. You don't need a selection when you are moving the entire layer.

      I don't know why but today it worked. The only change I made was to use Command D to deselect everything.

      Yes it is Monterey 12.6 on a Macbook Pro from 2015 so it is an Intel chip. 

      And--Yes, I will be running a workshop, but the subject is Photography and the Art of Seeing. I definitely cannot teach Photoshop.  Thank you all for your help. If you see anything in this screenshot that explains the problem and solution, please let me know.

        Can you show a screenshot of your Layers panel?

        • If one layer is a Background layer, convert it to a regular layer by clicking the lock icon
        • If either layer is locked, unlock it
        • What is the file format — png, tiff, psd, jpeg, gif?
        • Are you working in RGB, CMYK, Index, Lab, or Grayscale?

          Files are RGB Tiff. All are unlocked.
