I want  to use Color Range  for skin tone editing but it is grayed out. I then tried to convert from 32 bit mode to 8 or 16 bilt but every time I did that i got a Camera Raw  opening.  There is no place on Camera Raw to change 32 bit to16 or 8 although the document in Raw looks like 8 bit.  Canceling out of raw restores my original 32 bit image. I am using CC 2017 in the latest (12/15/16) update, on a PC running Windows 10 with automatic updates enabled.  Please go beyond the Tutorials which don't work.

    Hi Melvin

Are you sure it is Camera Raw that is opening.

When you convert from 32 bit to 16 bit or 8 bit an HDR toning box opens. This is necessary as it allows you to decide how to squeeze the 32 bits of information (which have a very high dynamic range) into 16 bit. There are lots of options to ensure that you get the conversion to look the way you want. Some want a natural looking conversion some want that "HDR look".

If you are seeing something else can you post a screenshot

It does say "Camera Raw" at the upper left.

Here is screen shot of what I get:

Hi Melvin - yes that is Camera Raw.

You must have "Use Adobe Camera Raw to convert documents from 32 bit to 16/8 bit" set in Preferences - File Handling.

If you want to use the HDR toning - uncheck that preference
