Undoing a batch rename

I made a big mistake and I'm hoping some can help me to fix it.

I tried to batch name a 500 images so they would be in order (301, 302,303 etc.) whaile figuring it out how to do it  I had to try two or three times before I got it right. I eventually got them cronolgicly orders but now the items I took pictures of are out of order. The picture of item 408 is  now named 688.jpg and item 135 is names 298. etc. How do I undo this mistake?

Did you tick the following option when performing your first Batch Rename in Adobe Bridge?

And did you then untick this option before the subsequent renaming attempts?

EDIT: You can use File > File Info > Raw Data to see if you have embedded metadata for the filename:

And files from some camera's may store a "unique filename" entry as well.

Adobe Bridge will use the view/sorting order for batch renaming input order.

So if you can sort the items by date or some other criteria that is not based on the incorrect names, then you can rename with a new starting sequence number and use the input sorting order arrangement as the input order. Bridge also alsows a custom sort where you can manually arrange the input order.
