But they are not.
I am having some really funky problems with CS4 and the only way I know of perhaps correcting them is to uninstall and reinstall.
My problem: The program will not uninstall because it says Bridge and Updater are open. But they are not.
Please help!
Liz
When you installed your saved files from the backup did you also install CS4 from that or did you install from the PS CS4 disk?
If you ran from the backup I think the install was botched.
What I would do is deactivate CS4. Choose to deactivate as if your installing onto another computer. Then remove CS4 and re-install. Reinstall the software as Admin. When you insert the disk don't run it. Open to explore and look for the photoshop file. in that file look for the .exe file. Right click on that and

Depending on your setup Bridge may be running in the background. Open Task Manager and click on the processes tab. Check for any instance of Bridge.exe. If found close program.

Okay, I did that and also did the same with Adobe Updater.
My problem still remains though: CS4 is acting 100% strange. It is stalling at times on my computer. I can never keep layers panel on my workspace even though when I am closing the program, I have to add it every time I open the workspace again.
The problems I have with it are not in seen CS3. (I bought a CS3 upgrade to CS4.) I went to CS3 on my computer to see if it would work, and it does.
I bought CS3 upgrade for CS2.
NOTE: This program worked well until 1/2/2010 when I had to take computer into the shop because of malware. They had to run a backup on my computer. When I reinstalled the Adobe programs, that is when I ran into this diffculty. Prior to this, no such problems with CS4.

But before you install you want to run the CS4 clean script. Follow the instructions but there is a level one or level two cleaning. Type in 3 and clean it out.
http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html
Run the microsoft cleanup utility
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Download and run CCleaner to locate and remove any lingering files. It is free and works great
If you have Adobe reader installed remove it. Sometimes it causes CS4 install issues.
Turn off any anti-virus software.
If running Vista or Windows 7 turn off Windows defender. You can keep the firewall on.
When installing CS4 you do not have to install CS3 or CS2. Just type in CS2 or CS3 serial numbers when asked.
During CS4 install at 90 percent the install will hang for about 10 mins. That is normal.
After CS4 is installed reboot. After reboot right click on PS CS4 in Start where the programs are listed. click on properties, compatibility, then check run as Admin. hit apply then ok to close. Start Photoshop and update.
If you can defrag before and after CS4 install.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled it last night before seeing your instructions. Used CS4 this a.m. with no apparent major glitches. I have a minor one, but will see if it continues, and if I do and run into another brick wall again, I will follow them to the letter. I have printed them out.
THANKS!!

CS4 is not working right at all.
I will have to use your instructions to reinstall it.
I am reinstalling it to same computer, so I do not believe I need to deactivate.
BEFORE I DO THIS: The Geek who came to my house fiddled with some of the buttons on the computer and related to time allowed to start up the computer. I cannot tell you exactly where he was, but what he did, he said, would help the computer start quicker.
Before I go through install business, is it possible that his actions are causing the problem and it is not Adobe??
There are times when I am trying to delete an image, and I will get an error message related to settings, and I cannot have access to that file.
There are photos that will show up in CS3, but when I do get a chance to have access to CS4 before it freezes on me, some of the photos do not show up - their title does, but there thumbnail is not there but the "picture" symbol shows.

The only sure fire way to make the operating system start faster is to turn off start up programs that you don't need when windows starts up. Depending on the operating system there are other tweeks that can be done.
If the operating system will not allow you to delete a file then there is something not set right with permissions. When you are logged in you are logged in as a Admin?
I forgot or didn't ask but what Operating system are you using? XP, Vista, Windows 7? 32 bit or 64 bit?
What is the error message? You wrote settings and I assume it is the security settings error?
What happens when CS4 freezes on you? Any error message? Does it lockup hard and you have to close CS4 to restart?
Windows has a built in event viewer log that records crashes and such. If you can look in event viewer and post that.

ERROR #2 Applications Event Record
This error was mentioned over 100 times (I stopped counting at 100!!): Adobe Version Cue CS3 cannot be found.
There was a red circle with a white "X" next to every one of these.
- - - - - - - - -
The geek did not like how slow my computer was when it was turning on. That was when he fiddled with settings.
I am the administrator of the computer - I am the only one using it.
It is Windows XP. 32 bit.
Hard lock up??? Yes. I lose patience with trying to get out of the program and end up unplugging it at the wall. Last night I had a project I had to do and I used CS3 with no problem. I have some other photoshop work to day this morning and am avoiding CS4 (to get you a better description of errors) until you tell me to do so. I hope just above info will provide you with clue to the problem.

It is not healthy for your hard drvie unplgging your computer from the wall. The read/write heads will not park correctly and stands a chance of contacting the hard drive platters. This could destroy a hard drive.
The best way to unfreeze is to hit CTRL, Alt, Delete keys to bring up task manager. Click on the applications tab, High-lite CS4 and hit the End Task button. This will end CS4 running.
If your computer freezes up and no keys work or anything then press your computers start button and hold it for 5 to 6 seconds or until the computer shuts off.
Error #1: I think he altered something. As you said he changed something to make your computer run faster. Not sure what he did but you would not get this error on a Windows XP default install.
Is Windows XP up to date with SP3? If not update.
This is a new download software program for windows XP/Vista that is suppose to fix security changes and restores them to Windows default. I have not tried it myself as I don't have any issues to fix. But it may help you. It is called Fix it.

I ran that program.
Went into CS4. It downloaded very quick. Went into images. Opened one without a problem. Opened another. Then it stalled out on me.
Note: I do generally use the contraol/alt/delete key to get out of programs. I do that all of the time but with CS4 this week it was not working, but your other methods will be used next time I have the problem.
Back to today: Again, CS4 stalled. I used control/alt/delete and was able to get out of the program.
I went to the events monitor for applications. Prior error #2 is happening again with the "Adobe Version Cue Cs3 cannot be found."
I did not know what SP3 means. Then Googled it. I do have that new external drive connected to the computer. I see program on updating it on Microsoft but to be 100% sure which link I should use, would you show me?? Thanks.

SP3 means service pack 3. sorry.
It is a massive update that microsoft used to update Windows XP awhile back. If you right click on Computer (maybe called my computer in XP) and click on properties the information for Windows XP will be at the top. Should say Service pack 3.
So when you ran Fix it did you reboot? I don't remember reading that rebooting is required but I would think it would because you are making changes to your computer. I would run Fix it again then reboot. Then try CS4 again.
I am hoping you do not need to reinstall CS4.

Hi - Just got home.
No, did not reboot after fix-it, but will run it again and then reboot right away.
Looked at properties and SP3 is there.

EDIT: Ran fix it program again and turned off computer and turned it back on.
Took awhile for the computer to turn on, but this was the way it was before Geek fiddled with it.
Got internet going on the computer then clicked on CS4. Opened up an image - and this was done really fast. I thought many happy thoughts in that nanosecond.
Then opened up second image, and again the computer become rock hard stalled.
Tried control/alt/delete and CS4 would not close. Tried it several times. Everything else on computer was working fine, Google, email, yada yada, but I could not get CS4 to close. So, turned off computer per usual method and surprisingly it worked.
Am typing this on my laptop, getting ready to call it a night.

What happens if you open Photoshop CS4, click on the bridge icon to open bridge, find a photo to open, double click on the photo to open in Photoshop? You should get one to open ok. Keep this open and do that process again so you will have 2 photos open in Photoshop CS4. Did that work ok?
I remember reading a fix for the 2nd photo crashing everything. I need to look for it as it is buried in the forums. Maybe someone else knows off the top of their head.
Edit:
You can read this artical too. A lot you have already done.

I opened up bridge and opened about 4 images with no problem in CS4.
I then used the "file open" and tried to open a few photos and had no problem.
I am going to later work on a project that thankfully if bridge DOES bridge over the error in the system, I can use Bridge as a temporary method to use CS4... but I do need a fix for that file issue.
Will read the article you posted. Thanks for link.

I had a new error showing up this morning in event viewer for applications - The title was "Media Center Extender Services" with red circle/white cross.
ERROR: Device Service Initialization - Unable to create or initialize Device Table. Error code 0x80004005.
EDIT: With both Bridge and CS4 open, I went to a stock photo web site to purchase an image.
I purchased the image, then went to download and it would not download. The computer stalled. I got completely off of the stock photo web site, closed up Bridge and CS4, and then wen back to the web site to download the photo.
Whatever photoshopping I am doing today, until there is a fix, I have to avoid CS4.
EDIT: Another error showed up in the event viewer today in system, "Storage Server Error"
RSM could not load media in drive Drive 0 of library Generic USB SD Reader USB Device.
This error I see showed up today and yesterday. In looking further on events viewer for system, there are at least one instance (or more) of these types of errors:
Today: Removeable storage error
Service Control Manager error
Netlogon error
Yesterday: Removeable storage error
Service control manager error
Netlogon error
SRTSP error

If the External drive came with a driver CD upload the drivers.
From what I can tell there are only generic drivers loaded for the external drive. With the external hard drive installed you can right click on the drive in Computer, look for hardware tab, click on properties, Click on Driver tab and if you can update driver tab. Choose update driver from the internet if offered. If there are new drivers they will download and install. Reboot the computer
Second way to update the drivers:
If you don't see what I wrote, Left click on Computer, Click on Device manager. Look for the external drive and expand it. Click on the drive and look for Update driver and choose from internet if offered. If there are newer drivers offered then they will download and install. Reboot the computer.
Did you format the external drive? Is there data on it? If there is data on the drive you need to back it up on like a DVD. To format the external drive click on computer, look for the external hard drive (it should be hooked up to your computer already) then right click on the external drive and choose format. I would just do a quick format. Choose FAT32 for the format. (might be the only format option)

Okay, I had time to pay closer attention to your earlier response.
I went to update the driver through Computer, Device Manager.
I found the update driver for CS4 under the External Hard Drive.
I clicked on it. Did not download right away and I walked away. Came back at least 30 minutes later, and it is still running.
It does not look like it is going to connect to the internet.

So your computer cannot connect to the internet? Have you tried to go to the external drive makers website and download from there?
Is your internet service connected coming from a cable box and the cable box is hooked to a router? Sometimes you have to turn the firewall off in XP because the router has a built in firewall and that will slow things down.
Same thing with a anti-virus software having built in firewall. Sometimes anti-virus will not shut down the XP firewall thus resulting in double firewalls. This can slow down downloads or not allow downloads at all.
What I am concerned about is the 3 hits you posted above. Something is just not right, I think, with the security settings still.
I have a friend who has a computer with XP on it. I will take a look at the settings on that as I have to go over there in a few minutes.
Edit: I am looking at XP now and typing on their computer. I can see how I got you lost with the my computer directions and trying to find device manager. I am sorry for that. I will take a lookie see in their security settings.

I did find that in Windows XP the service control manager deals with events during startup.
SRTSP is a Norton file used for updating virus definitions.
Netlogon error is just that.
Removable storage error is just that.
From reading I would suspect that some items are turned off in either Startup or Services or both and the service control manager is what is reporting the errors.
Go to Start and select Run. Type in msconfig. hit ok or the enter button. Go to startup and look for any norton items not checked and check them. I am not sure if you will see any External hard drive in there but if you do put a check mark in there too. You will need to reboot.
Go to start and select Run. Type in services.msc and hit OK or Enter. You should see some Net enteries down the list. If you see Net Driver (with your adapter card listed maybe?) ensure it is started and set to automatic. Also:
Net Logon: Set to Manual
Netmeeting Remote.. Set to Manual
Network Access Protection Agent: Set to Manual
Network Connections Set to Automatic Shuold show started too.
Network DDE Disabled
Network DDE DSDM Disabled
Network Location Awareness Set to manual Should show started too.
Network Provisioning Service Set to manual
Portable Media Serial Number Service Set to manual

I carefully tried to do your instructions on what to be sure was on, disabled, manual, yada yada.
Right off the bat the net driver was not on. I changed it to started and made sure it said automatic.
Individually went through your other items. Several changes had to be made - example net logon I had to change to manuel, disabled Network DDE... etc. Turned off computer, and turned on, and it actually seemed to start quicker. Maybe it is my imagination. HA.
Do not want to try anything with CS4 until I am through with external drive issue. I did try to connect it via computer itself and it did not go anywhere for a minute or two, so I decided to just totally forget that route and use the web site instead.
I went to WD ELements and this is the page for the downloads.
Which one should I select??
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=304&lang=en
My external disk drive model is WDBAAU0025HBK which fits for this category.
Once external drive issue is addressed, then I will attempt CS4.
EDIT: By the way, in the services.msc box, these things were not checked. I did not check any of them until I hear back from you.

At this point, I would set the startup and services to Default and exit msconfig as Normal. It looks like you may have a number of items improperly set. Then try again.
Are you running dual boot by any chance? XP and like Vista or Win7?

As Hudechrome wrote about going back into msconfig and select a normal startup would be a good choice as I do not know what is loaded in Startup. We can alsways go back in and turn off what is not needed to start later on.
I have to admit that I am surprised at what you found disabled in services.msc. No wonder you're having issues.
As far as the downloading of the software drivers I did not find any to download on that page so the generic drivers, provided by Windows XP, are just fine. Considering all the network items the person disabled I am almost positive that the external drive was effected.
The speeding up of your computer is not your imagination. All those services turned off can effect the performance of the computer if the wrong choice was made. The person made some changes not fully knowing the effect the change would cause. There are a lot of services that are tied together and shutting one off will effect others.

Ya gotta baby step me through what was mentioned by Hudechrome, dec9. Sorry.
My geek, is a very nice guy. He's not a youngster, by any means. Had a great conversation about his experiences at Woodstock. He's my husband's age. But, I got some clues when he was here that he was not the best help for me, but.... at least I had Woodstock. LOL.
Hudechrome: I believe the correct answer to your question is XP and Windows7.
Which brings up a point about the Big Box store: I had the malware. They had my computer. They had to do a complete backup. (I am not 100% sure they had to do that to begin with, but that is another story.) When I picked up my computer and brought it home --i could not get to Google or anything that I should be able to get. So I brought the computer back to the Big Box (same initials as store) and the gal said I did not have a windows program. Her statement was they did not install one because they did not know which one the customer would prefer.
WTF?? I told her I am a computer stupid person and how in the world can they give me back my computer without it being functional?? It was like going to the car repair shop to pick up my car and finding out yes, I can take it home, but not being able to drive it out of the parking lot before it stops.
So, my last #(!@)&%&*#) visit at that store, the gal installed, I believe, Windows 7, but I cannot readily verify that. Ya have to tell me where to look. Once she downloaded it, the computer had access to the internet and I left with it. It took me 2 weeks to finally get my computer back, and then it was in that state. grrrr..... With the backup, I did not lose photos/documents, unluckily I lost all programs (PS) and had to reinstall them. Lost all brushes I had downloaded off the net. Lost anything else (Filters) I had added. PLUS, I lost all of my email/email contact addresses. The latter I was floored about. My blood pressure is going up as I type this. Oh, but they saved my favorite bookmarks -- but not all of the ones I had.
So you see, I have had horrible experiences with that store and then not-so-great experience with my geek.
2010 has been kinda rough.
