Urgent Help Needed: Photoshop Slowing Down My Creative Flow!

Hi everyone,

I'm facing a frustrating issue with Photoshop (with the last 5-6 versions) running extremely slow on my PC. Every action, from selecting layers to editing text, takes 2-3 seconds – it's affecting my productivity and driving me a bit crazy!

I've tried several fixes:

• Reinstalled Windows (currently on Windows 11 Pro 22H2)
• Used Adobe's cache cleaner Unfortunately, none of these steps have made a difference.

Here are my computer specs:

• SSD: Samsung SSD 980 PRO 2TB
• CPU: Intel i9-9980XE
• RAM: 64GB DDR4
• GPU: RTX3080

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any suggestions on what I can do to solve this issue? I really appreciate any help you can offer!

Hi @Sergej331842783m1e, a few questions to see if we can narrow down some things:

1. Do you also have Photoshop Beta installed? If so, try uninstalling both Photoshop and Beta and then reinstall only Photoshop. Any difference?
2. Do you have any third-party plug-ins running? If so, hold the Shift key when starting Photoshop. A notice will ask if you would like to skip loading plug-ins. Press “Yes” and Photoshop will start without enabling those plugins.
3. Have you tried manually resetting your Preferences? Steps on that are here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually.
4. Do you have the latest NVIDIA Studio (not the Gaming) driver installed for your RTX3080 graphics card (v546.01 Release date 11/01/2023)? If not, make sure to install the update.
5. After trying these steps without success, from Photoshop, please go to Help > System Info and copy the details here in a reply, and we'll take a look at your configuration.

Hi @Sergej331842783m1e, thanks for narrowing things down. Looking at your system info, you have plenty of power, free scratch space, and GPU accessible RAM. Compared to my system, it's more robust, but I have not experienced any slowness (although I'm using Windows 10). I note you have the memory used by Photoshop at 80%. Any reason for that? 70% is recommended. Try adjusting and restarting. (Von Photoshop verwendeter Arbeitsspeicher: 80 %.)

I'm also curious to know what your Internet upload and download speeds are, although that may not have anything to do with your performance issues, it's only another factor. Are you located inside or outside the US? You can do a test here:  https://www.speedtest.net. Here are my results as a comparison. Others may have more insights for you, too. Let us know how it goes!

@J E L There is no reason for 80%. One thought was giving it more RAM for better performance, but sadly nothing changes with 70% or 80%. My Internet is not the best, but I guess it shouldn't be a problem. FYI: Even the hover effect of the menu elements are lagging...

WIth a slow connection like you have it's like dragging a boat anchor as they try to keep a connection.

@Kevin StohlmeyerI definitely have not the fastest internet connection, but it's still decent. That would not explain why even going with the mouse over the menu the hover effect lags when nothing is open. Overall performance is just horrible 😞

@Sergej331842783m1e, I'm sorry to hear that you still can't get Photoshop's performance to improve.  So far, we know your memory was set to 80% instead of 70%, you were using the NVIDIA gaming driver instead of the studio one, and your internet connection is not the best while running the heavy-use third-party plug-in from Topaz Labs. All of these factors can contribute to your system sluggishness despite having a very robust configuration. If I were in your situation, I would start over from scratch.

• Sign out of Adobe everywhere and close all Adobe applications.
• Run your computer manufacturer's Support Assist and Optimization tool to make sure your BIOS and drivers are all up to date, files are cleaned, network is optimized, and performance is tuned.
• Run Windows Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files.
• Do a manual check for Windows updates. Install any optional updates (see screenshot below).
• Reboot your system.
• Install the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool to remove Photoshop completely. **Be sure to copy any plug-ins, scripts, and other custom tools and presets to another folder.
• Log into the Creative Cloud Desktop app and reinstall Photoshop. Try some basic editing to see if there is any performance improvement. Reload your plug-ins one at a time and retest to make sure those aren't part of the problem.

If none of these steps improve your experience, then it's possible you have some type of conflict going with through your particular configuration and internet access. Let us know how it goes!

@J E L, I just did everything step by step as you recommend. First I removed Topaz AI from my Computer. I logged out of Adobe everywhere (browsers, apps...). Made sure the BIOS and all drivers are up to date. Run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary and additional files. All Windows updates installed including optional updates. Removed all files from my computer using Could Cleaner tool. Manually went to each Adobe folder to make sure everything was deleted. After that I downloadet CC App and reinstalled Photoshop only. Performance is still so bad its just not possible to work with. Yesterday Photoshop crashed after I double clicked on the text layer to change the text. It makes no sense to me, why this is happenning.

Hi, I see that Ps reports 3 4K monitors, and at the same time 3 times 2560x1440.

That's a lot of pixels to move... Could you check runnin only two of them?

PS does not report another integrated GPU, that can slow things down. 

The internet speed might explain some startup slowdown, I saw 24 seconds load times for the panels...

This issue is keeping us guessing.

I had to look up your system hardware and it is more than adequate.

I have a couple of the 2Tb 980 PRO drives and they are lightning fast, but it would still be useful to test generally. 

Open Task Manager > Performance tab, and click in the top right corner to open resource Monitor. 

Arrange screen space so you can see all the windows, and set up something robust enough to test things.  Look for bottlenecks.  Check CPU clock speed in case it is getting hot and throttling.  

How about with a tiny canvas and functions that barely makes Photoshop sweat?

What is your image size in pixels btw?  We had a post this week from someone who thought they'd set the size in pixels, but it was set to inches, and they'd created a canvas 300,000 x 300,000 pixels and wondered why performance was suffering.

Is it only Photoshop that is down on performance?  Jain and Kevin have asked you the right questions and you have done the right tests AFAICT so it will be interesting to hear what you see with Resource Monitor, and give us feedback on image size.

I need help with resource Monitor and checking for bottelnecks. I have no idea how to do it. Is there any tutorial that I can follow?

@Sergej331842783m1e, thanks for posting the video. Right, that is painfully slow for the horsepower your system shows. I appreciate the time you took to follow all the steps for starting from scratch, too. I'm sorry to hear that nothing improved. We're back to thinking about your internet speed and perhaps some type of blocking that is going on with a firewall or other service that's running. Do you have a Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive sync app active? Turn those off if you do. It may have something to do with Adobe servers being blocked in your country. That is very unlikely, but I'm trying to think of every scenario. Since this has been happening for you with the last 5 or 6 versions of Photoshop, perhaps the only solution to get normal speed back is to revert to a version where you were not experiencing the slowdown. You will give up some new features, including Generative Fill, however. Another idea is to try running only Photoshop Beta instead of the public release to see if that makes any difference.

ETA: One more thing. Can you confirm if the slowness started happening when you switched to Windows 11?
