Using mask only the eraser works not the brush

I have been going through the tutorial step by step on Photoshop CC on layers/adjustment layers and masks and I cannot get the paint brush to reveal the adjustment (after I have made the layer black) only the eraser will expose the adjustment layer.  This is not what how its supposed to work according to the tutorial.. i have the mask selected etc... ahhhhhhhhh

    A couple of things to check.

    1. Make sure you have the mask selected in the layers panel (click on it and it will have a line around it)

    2. Make sure you're foreground colour is white and that your brush is set to that foreground by clicking on it

    3. Make sure your brush mode is set to Normal and opacity 100%

    If they all appear to be set as above - take a screenshot of your entire screen (including the brush options and layers panel), set as you are trying to paint on the mask, and post it here.
