Using Stack Modes for noise reduction

I want to reduce noise in an image using Mean/Median Stack mode. I thought if I were to open an image, save it as a TIFF and rename it say a dozen times I might be able to load all the TIFFs up into a stack and convert into a smart object to use one of the stack modes for noise reduction. This doesn't seem to work, yet, when you use images shot as part of a sequence, it does. Does Photoshop recognise that the image I have renamed a dozen times is actually only one image. I'm just curious as to how it knows I'm trying to cheat...
