Vector layers

Mar 29, 2023 Mar 29, 2023

I am trying to change the title text on my book into a vector layer but it doesn't give me the same options as the other layers. I don't get it. Usually, I just make it a work path and then create a vector mask but it doesn't allow me to. Can someone please help?

If you create a work path from your text, are you making a new layer with a fill where you then create the vector mask?

You could also select your text layer, right-click, and select Convert to Shape.

If you have the workpath, go Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color and it will become a shape layer

Are you trying to convert to shape ARM layer which is, it seems, already vector shape?

I think so. Is a vector shape different from a vector layer?

As Bojan states, what you are trying to convert is not a text layer anymore, but already converted into a shape layer (look at the icon in the layer thumbnail)

But... The two top layers are still text ones, as the T alludes.

the company that prints it told me they can't separate the title from the rest of the cover so they can emboss the text.

This sounds like you might need to add a spot color channel and apply that to the ARM layer, but others should confirm how to correctly set up embossing in a Photoshop document. Or you can ask your printer if that is what they need, to set up the ARM layer as a separate printing channel for embossing, then ask them how to set it up in Photoshop.

Yes, the thumbnail icon for the ARM layer in the Layers panel indicates it is already a shape layer. If you want to change its fill, because it’s a shape layer you can already do that directly in the Properties panel, or by dragging a solid color, gradient, or pattern swatch on it from the Swatches panel and dropping it on the shape layer. No further conversions are needed, just go ahead and edit the fill in one step.

What can help when working with shape layers is to arrange the workspace so that the Layers, Properties, and Paths panels are all visible at the same time. This helps you see what exactly is selected (e.g. the shape layer, the shape layer path, or the shape layer mask) and what options are available for that.
