Weird softness of brush

All of a sudden my brush is not soft by the edges.
Brush: general soft round brush
Mode: Normal

It looks like when you use it with the dissolve mode on. It also doesn't spread out evenly.

How do I make it soft again?

Is it banding perhaps?

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Brush Settings, Layers, Options Bar, …) and the Background Layer visible ?

I suspect you might just be thrown by the appearance againt a transparent background.

Came here to say this! Brushes can look totally different without an opaque background behind them. But still, like @c.pfaffenbichler said, do post a screenshot showing the brush size panel, just in case it's something with the Hardness slider::
