What is a mask?

Hi I’m a beginner digital artist and want to know what a mask is? And would it be useful for cell shading drawings if so could you tell me how to do it?

Hi Arron,

Imagine that you want to paint house numbers on the curb or a decorative border on a wall. The stencil is the mask. You protect the parts where you don’t want paint and the paint only goes in the areas that have been cut. That’s the basic principle of a mask in Photoshop. The tutorials from Bojan and Dean will fill in the how-to’s for using masks in Photoshop.

Hi Arron,

Masks are essentially a way to hide / make transparent or semi-transparent some parts of a layer to blend it with a layer behind.
