When adding a layer mask, I dont get the usual visual small screen addittion

Hi guys sorry but I have a noob question. I added a layer mask but instead of the normal white square I get a photo camera icon. Could you guys tell me how to correct this or is it perhaps the same function but just a different icon for some reason? I added a picture to make more clear.

I ran into this some months ago and found that resetting Preferences solved the problem. To reset them go to Prefeerences > General, click on the Reset Prefs marker and restart Photoshop.

Nothing look right for me in your layers palette for you have the Panel option Thumbnails size set to none

When you click on Panel Options...  the Layers Panel Options dialog should open for you to set the options.
