When using the font SF Pro in bold it becomes a different variant, how to fix?

When I use Apples developer font SF Pro in photoshop in Bold it turns into a cursive version, even when I try to change it back. In the weight box, it changes from Bold to Optical Size YAXS Weight-700 How do I fix this? It's basically impossible to use the bold version now.

Update: It's only in this specific PSD file that this happens.

Something about that specific PSD, Karin?

Have you tried copying the file at the OS level? (an old trick that works .0001% of the time)

Have you tried copying the text into a new PSD?

I don't see cursive (handwritten). Italicized?

Not a solution, but I have the exact same problem. The PSD file has 45 layers and started acting up around 40 layers. Initially, the four text layers with SF Pro Bold were OK, but when I started adding new layers, it got weird and converted four SF Pro Bold text layers to "Optical Size YAXS Weight-700". I replaced SF Pro Bold with Roboto, since the PSD file is for making YouTube miniatures, but I would prefer SF Pro Bold...

Warning flags for me were "Apple" and "developer." An excerpt from the developer's website: "Across all Apple products..."

Maybe apples (Apple fonts) and oranges (Adobe apps) don't mix.

SF Pro is a Variable font; I mistook the type logo for TrueType. I'm supposing that Optical Size YAXS Weight-700 is a font in the SF Pro family.

I'm downloading the font to see if I can reproduce the issue.

---testing---

Karin, respectfully, you left out the description of where the SF Pro font conversion occurs from Weight Bold to Weight Optical Size YAXS Weight-700.

After formatting my text as SF Pro/Bold, I saved my test file as a psd. As long as I didn't close the file, the weight remained Bold.

However, upon closing then re-opening the psd, I was prompted to make a decision about updating text layers now. The choices: No, Update, Learn More. See the attached screenshot for the choices and the accompanying verbiage, especially the phrase "before they can be used for vector-based output."

I selected Update; that is when and where Bold becomes Optical...

Observations:

  • Weight remains Optical... after closing the psd.
  • Choosing No -or- Update -or- Learn More did not retain Bold. Choosing any one of the three converted the Weight field to Optical...
  • Only restarting Ps 2025 v26.7.0 cleared the weight to reset it to the apparent default (Regular).
  • some 60 children under SF Pro are listed in the Weights field before the Update? prompt; Optical... is not. After the (meaningless) selection, Optical... is separated from the siblings by a dashed line. To me, that means Optical... is not a SF Pro child, but a bug or feature.
