Where did the simple selection tool go?

I've been an avid user of Photoshop for many, many years - but one thing I miss is the simple selection brush.
Don't get me wrong, Quick Selection and Object Selection are great - but I find that I miss the simple select brush on a daily basis!
It was so easy to use and to select exactly what I want instead of the selection jumping to random parts like the Quick Selection does.
So my question is - is it hidden somewhere? Or is there a plugin that adds it back in?

It's one of the most basic tools, alongside the brush and eraser, so I'm sad that it's gone.

Hello, click and hold on the object selection tool, or right-click on it to access the alternate tools. To get a simple painting tool, click on Q to activate (and exit) the quick mask mode where you can brush in selection.

It's not under the selection tools, just object, quick & magic wand? (see photo)
I might be missing something, but I've been looking for it for ages and only just thought to ask on here!

I don't recall Photoshop ever having a tool quite as you describe, but the same functionality is had  by going into Quick Mask Mode, by pressing Q or clicking on the icon just below the swatches near the bottom of the toolbar. Use any painting tool, and you will see a mask overlay; the default is red, but you can change it.

When done painting, switch back to standard mode by pressing Q again, and the mask becomes a selection.
