Why are my Library files .PSB?

I'm using the Libraries feature in Photoshop to have a shared folder of assets with other members of the team.

When I edit a library file that they've added to the shared library it opens as .psd however when I add files to to the library and go to edit them they are .psbs - how do I change it so that my files are also .psd?

You dont need to change the extension. PSB is similar to PSD (it stands for Photoshop Big - not kidding). And uses different compression algorithms to save space.

Thanks for the reply, but unforutnately I want to share these files with a client who does not have photoshop and so can not open .psbs - hence the reason why I need to change them or see if there's a setting I'm missing.

I think I've narrowed down the issue. If you add layers to library then it saves them as a .psd but if you first turn the layers in to a Smart Object and then add them to the library they are a .psb. which seems ... odd.

Smart objects are always PSB.
