Why can't I amend my mask with the brush tool ?

As you can see in the screenshot below, I have my mask visible, it is showing in black and white in the main window, but I am unable to paint white or black to amend the mask. As you can see on the left hand side, circled in blue, I don't have the black and white that get toggled with "X" when you can paint the mask.

And the brush refuses to paint too.

Why is that, what am I doing wrong ?

And here´s how the layers look like. Nothing fancy:

Hi

I don't see anything unusual about the mask in your screenshot.

Can you reset the brush colour to black and white by clicking here (the two tiny squares) ?:

If you do that and it still won't paint check your brush settings - particularly the mode, opacity and flow :

OK, clicking on the two tiny squares did it. I can't believe it was so simple.

Thanks a lot !
