Why does Photoshop constantly turn off Auto-save?

Photoshop has been crashing a lot lately (I don't know why, often new versions introduce myriad new bugs and it's not something I can reproduce), and it seems to do a thing where it intermittently turns off Auto-saving, so that sometimes it recovers my files and sometimes it doesn't, depending on whether it has decided to turn this, honestly, most significant feature of the entire program off.

 

I can't for the life of me understand why this would happen, and honestly I don't know why it's even a feature that you CAN turn off. It should be fixed on always, with only the option to change the time between saves. No one would say no to free insurance. Bizarre choice to even have this be an option.

 

I'm on the latest version of PS.

    Hi @dhakerman as suspected, you only have 42 GB of free disk space (at the time captured) which most likely means you are running out of scratch disk as you work in PS which prevents auto save from saving files because it has no room. I would recommend having at least 100 GB free space for scratch disk. PS alone can take up to 20 GB at start up.

     

    Also be aware your R9 M380 is not responding properly and does not show driver version or date installed. You may need to check for updates for it.
