Why does PS eat up all the RAM and slow to a crawl?
I am hoping some of you Pro users can help me with this.

Within 15 min of starting a project, PS eats up 20 gigs of Ram and slows to a crawl. Running the SudoPurge command in terminal used to work. The only thing that works now is to quit and restart PS.

I've streamlined PS preferences, decreased history states, reduced and increased Cash and Tile sizes. I have a dedicated SD drive for working files and scratch disk. and run PS off another drive.

I’ve been dealing with this for years and never found a way to keep it running smooth or fast for long. Is this as good as it gets?

When you say "run PS off another drive" - do you mean you are running PS on your local Mac HD?

Can you confirm your project specs? 4500 px RGB even with 50 -100 layers is only 57-60 MB. Are you utilizing smart objects in your files?

What percentage RAM are you allowing PS in your Performance preferences?

Can you also go to Photoshop/Help/System Info and copy/paste the report in here?

Thanks!

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the feedback,

My project specs are:

.psd

4500x4500 Pixels. (500 MB saved file size)

RBG

50 to 100 layers.

Letting PS use 80% of RAM

I have not been using smart objects.

I just recently read about using smart objects to save file size. and will start utilizing.

Here is PS system info:

Hi Aaron -

I am new at this, helping othrs with Photoshop. After looking over your problem, what kind of external drive are you using for your scratch disk? An SSD? or a rotating disk? If an SSD your scratch disk is not the problem. If a rotating disk, fragmentation could eat you alive. You are using your scratch disk to hold all of your history states. Does your scratch disk hold any other data?

You have enough RAM and it looks like you may have allocated enough RAM to Photoshop. So the first thing I would do is to look at the efficiency of Photoshop. To do this:

  1. At the bottom of the Photoshop image window there is a hiden menu indicated by a ">" symbol.
  2. Click on the ">" symbol and in the menu, choose Efficiency.
  3. If the value in the indicator is less than 100%, Photoshop has used all available RAM and is using the scratch disk.
  4. If the efficiency is less than 90%, allocate more RAM to Photoshop or add more RAM to your system.

I also suggest going to this Adobe website: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-slow-lags.html.

Yes, I am using an external SDD drive.

This Drive is just a scratch disk for PS, with nothing else on it.

Samsung T7 Portable SSD

USB 3.2 Read up to 1,050 MB/sec Seq. Write up to 1,000 MB/sec Seq.

Someone mentioned it might be my GPU,

AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4 GB

Do you think adding a secont GPU would have any positive effect?

Aaron:

Have you tried Malvick's suggestion of checking Document Efficiency?  That should help you determine if it's a performance issue (meaning you need a more powerful computer) or something else causing Photoshop to lag.

Your Samsung T7 Portable SSD is connected via a USB3 port, right?  You're not getting the full bandwidth of the device.  You could try using a Thunderbolt SSD instead for improved bandwidth.  Of course, this means purchasing a Thunderbolt 3 SSD and a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter.

Photoshop is supposed to use up all available RAM, and that will happen very quickly (even for moderate file sizes). That's why you have a scratch disk. There is no such thing as "enough RAM", ever. RAM is not the problem here!

So from everything described here, it appears your scratch disk is the bottleneck. That's what you need to look at.

The scratch disk needs to be on a fast drive, not external if it can at all be avoided, and you need to have enough free space. To keep Photoshop operating efficiently, 250 GB should be considered minimum, much more if you work on large files.

NO. Photoshop is not supposed to soak up all available RAM.
There is no reason why photoshoup should use 10 20 gigs of ram without any activity. Scratch disk does not affect ram usage in this instance. Only read/write bottleneck would be effected by different drives or connection. The Problem is that phothshop soaks up all ram and never lets go untill it strangles.

Photoshop will and should use all available RAM. Emphasis on available, which is the limit you set in Preferences. Don't set this too high, then you will strangle the system.

This RAM will be reused as you open and close files. It will not be released back to the OS until you close the application, and the reason is speed. Constantly requesting RAM from the OS is a lot slower. Again, this is by design.

With advanced raster image editing, RAM is but a drop in the ocean. Real memory requirements are orders of magnitude higher than any RAM you may have installed. The heavy lifting is on your scratch disk. That's usually the bottleneck! Consider the scratch disk Photoshop's main memory, with RAM as a fast access cache. You normally need around 250-500 GB free space for the scratch disk.

If Photoshop uses more RAM than what you specify in Preferences, something's wrong on your system. That shouldn't happen. A possible problem could be third-party plugins with a memory leak.

NO, Photoshop isnt supposed to soak up all ram untill it crushes the system. Why would it keep eating more RAM?  The RAM isnt "Reused" its just locked up.  and Photoshop will kust keep eating way way past it's alloted 10 gigs.  300+ Gigs of available scratch and system locks up without even opening a file?  Not how things are suposed to go. The 3rd party applications with memory leaks are the Adobe CC Programs.

I never go a month without finding orphaned Photoshop Temp files.  Right now, Photoshop is closed and I still have this file. but I remember my PC randomly restarted a couple of days ago.

image.png

Just opening Photoshop causes temp files to be created nowadays.  If you have the huge Kyle Megapack brush group open then that's a 2Gb temp file before you even start creating.  The temp file below is a bit over 5Gb, but I know deleting most of the brush groups will reduce that temp file  (on opening Photoshop) by a couple of Gb.  I don't know what the rest of the temp file is made up of, but we can gues at custom workspaces, Toolbars, patterns Styles etc.

image.png

As far as the temp files go, any Photoshop temp files left in the root directory of your primary scratch drive when Photoshop is shut down, can be deleted.

Regarding RAM, Photoshop does not seem to use a whole lot of it.  I have 64Gb and Photoshop is at the default 70%, but never comes close to maxing out on RAM.  As Dag says, Scratch files are what keeps it running, so it is important to use your fastest drives and make sure you have plenty of free space.
