Question

Why has Adobe messed up my CS6 version

A few weeks ago My versob of CS6 was workingf just fine I could open CR2  and NEF files without a problem, HSL adjustments worked perfectly, now  I cannot open NEF files and HSL Adjustments have  been totally destroyed.  Now before anyone jumps on me, I also run CC2018 and dislike it for several reasons not to mention the latest changes to HSL adjustments and the additional loading time.  CS6 used to work, Adobe does not support it anymore, I understand that, but if they do not support it anymore why did they change it? Calls to Adobe have been totally useless.  I am somewhat annoyed

Are you aware that there are two versions of Photoshop CS6?

    a) Photoshop CS6 Standard/Extended and

    b) Photoshop CS6 for Creative Cloud.

The feature set of the two versions are identical. I don't have CS6 installed any longer but I seem to recall that if you install CS6 for Creative Cloud it will replace the stand alone version CS6 Standard/Extended , if you did that then all your settings would change as they would not have been migrated to the Creative Cloud version.

I think you might have nailed it Terry.  With a CC subscription, the OP might have been able to use a later version of Camera RAW with the CC version of CS6

I don't think it works that way. I have CS6 installed along with CC, installed it some years ago using the CC desktop app, and the ACR version is 8.5.

On CC 2018 the ACR version is 10.3.

Also, from this page Camera Raw 9.5 now available :

    Camera Raw 9.5 now available

Camera Raw 9.5 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and the Creative Cloud application.

As mentioned in an update to our camera support policy here, Camera Raw 9.5 is only available in Photoshop CC or later.
Customers using older versions of Photoshop can utilize the DNG Converter for continued camera support.

It's four years since the last CS6 update went out, so unless a CC2018 update has affected CS6, It probably wasn't Adobe that broke CS6.   They certainly haven't 'changed' it.

What operating system are you using?  If Windows 10, they have been issues around Windows updates.

Tell us a bit about your hardware, or paste System Info here (from the Help menu).

Open CS6 and go Help > About plugins > Camera RAW and tell us what version it says.

Do your RAW files open in CC2018 ?

Have you file associations been changed perhaps? Open Bridge and check Preferences > File Associations

You say you have reset CS6 Preferences.  Have you also reset Camera RAW Preferences?  I am not entirely sure how you go about that with CS6, but I am sure you can use Google as well as I can.

Thanks, my first thought was that it was Microsoft update for Windows 10, still not 100% certain it wasn't and it seems to point more and more towards something Adobe did to CC2018 as all the changes there seem to have been applied to CS6.  For some strange reason they linked my two accounts as I had a similar problem before and on reseaerching found both CS6 and previosu CS programs were all under my CC ID, after getting that resolved, everything worked properly, then they did it again linked  both accounts even though user ID was seperate. Anyway Camera Raw for CS6 is now 9.1.1.461 which is not what it was previously as I was able to use it for my Nikon D500  NEF files, which I am unable to do now . In CC 2018 no problem except HSL Adjustments have been changed for the worst, which is another thing that changed in CS6 RAW 9.1.1.461.  Microsoft updates would not have changed that.   Updates for CC2018  seem to have had an effect on CS6 because Adobe linked my accounts.. I have not touched CS6 Camera RAW preferences just the preferences for CS6, I can't find anything that resembles the screen you have shown above in CS6 or CC 2018.

When things were working how you've described, what was your workflow, the clicks, the sequence of software, that opened up D500 NEFs in CS6?   Was CS6 already loaded and you used File / Open and browsed to each NEF individually, or did you start from Explorer or Finder or some other image-browsing software, choose Open in PS or double-click to open in the default "opener"?

actually tried both ways, but normally I use explorer to open the .NEF file and it opens CS6 then Adobe RAW converter, make my adjustments and then select open as copy keeping the original NEF file untouched
