Why is it that sometimes I can't edit the gradient mask again and sometimes I can?

Question

With higher versions of Photoshop, you can modify the gradient based on the original gradient mask, but sometimes you can't activate the gradient mask and you have to drag out the gradient again.

When you switch elsewhere and click the mask again, the gradient lever no longer appears.
I tried clicking in so many places and I can't activate the gradient on the mask.

Gods, please enlighten me.

Hi @dublove,

I can understand how frustrating it is to lose access to the gradient adjustments on a mask—especially when you’ve set it up precisely! This behavior is actually expected when using gradients on layer masks. Photoshop doesn’t retain the gradient adjustments directly on a layer mask when the file is closed and reopened.

A helpful workaround is to use a Gradient Fill layer instead and clip it to your intended layer. This way, the gradient remains editable anytime you reopen the file. I’m also sharing a sample file demonstrating this approach so that you can see it in action.

Thank you very much.I just can't seem to download this file of yours.The “download” button flashes and a page jump occurs.I quickly click on it and it says the file is downloaded, but it doesn't download. I'm sorry.Then I changed my browser and was able to download it.
