Why isn't the character aligning with the selection? It's supposed to be in the middle of the rectangle.

Right click on Type layer and choose Convert to Point Text then try again to align.

Can you describe in detail the method you are using to attempt the alignment?

Not sure if you are asking for the text to be centered in the text box or the green field. If you want it centered in the text box. Use the alignment tool in type character menu. If you want it centered in the green box. Pull your text bar to the left and also pull the text bar to the right.

There is one more way you can move your text box slowly to the center and it will show pink guides when you are in the center.
