Why Photoshop saves PSD and not in JPEG format by default?

Question

In PSCC when saving a pix some become a PSD but I need Jpg.
Attached you will see that in history I have not done anything different to make it at PSD.  Yet in the photo you can see a layer but nothing in the history indicates this.  Is that because I throw it back into Camera Raw at some point?
  Though some pix I save are just as I want them as Jpg's.
What am I doing to make it a PSD and how can I stop doing this?
Not until recently has this started to happen as in the past all pix have been Jpg.

I notice you use the Crop Tool. If you do not select the option to delete cropped pixels, it changes your image to a layered file which cannot be saved as a jpeg. You can export it as a jpeg if you want to keep the original file for later edits, or you can flatten the layers and then it can be directly saved as a jpeg.

Hi Penni,Welcome to the Adobe Community! When you edit an image in Photoshop and unlock it's layer. Photoshop saves it as a PSD by default and it is expected behavior.Regards,Sahil
