Why wont the jpeg just save?

I open a jpeg in PS CC 2019. I do a crop. I choose to save.

Why wont the file just save? Why does it bring up a new dialogue box with the full file selection dropdown at the bottom, and then when I tediously choose jpeg for these, get a copy?

Is this a nuisance preference I can change somewhere? Thanks.

    Correct answer D Fosse

You have the crop tool set to "hide", not "delete". This creates a floating layer, which is not allowed in the jpeg file format specification.

So PS saves a copy, and then prompts you to save the original with layers intact.

Thanks D, I'm from era when crop too did not require a Phd!

But hiding has advantages too, correct? Do you keep delete checked or unchecked?

I remember the up to speed books, and a few other names, but never got them. These days I just stay with the Lynda/Deke vids and keep it simple.

In any case that's all I got, I hope you find what works best for you.

Thanks Gene, if you have any Favorite vids list let me know..
