Wood Scratch Effect in Photoshop

Hey all, so basically, I need help with achieving a specific effect for a Photoshop project I'm doing.

The original picture I am modifying is a wooden electrical post, my task being to edit the wood near the top to appear scratched, specifically by bird talons.

I know this is super specific lmao but I honestly don't really know how to make that effect so I'm coming here for some help.

Thanks!

Please post (the pertinent section of) the image.

Do you have any reference images?

Yes! The picture here is what I'm attempting to edit.

As for the scratches, I couldn't really find anything online that perfectly matches my idea of what I want it to look like, but maybe something like this?

I think you might be making life hard for yourself here.

The scratches on the polished wood would have to look very different on the rougher surface of the pole, but the image is so small that plausibly sized scratches might barely register.

You may also want to experiment with the Bevel > Emboss Layer Style.
