P: Add option to disable ALT/OPT + Click 'Zoom to layer' behavior

Community Beginner ,

Going to go back to the previous version of PS until there is a way to turn this off or it's changed or eliminated. Seems someone at Adobe forgot that holding "Alt" while clicking a layer group is how we collapse/expand layers! Now when I try to collapse a layer group the whole thing zooms???? No bueno, Adobe.

It's not fixed here in version 21.0.3. In fact it STARTED FOR ME on this version. What gives? SUPER annoying!

I know its much easier for you to assume users as idiots at first but no, by selection, ı mean the selection on the screen. I am using photoshop to earn my living for 16 years straight now, thank you. And I am sure many people here are using ctrl/alt + thumbnail to add and subtract layer pixels to make complex selections. It is obvious developers or testers don't have any clue, tough...

Edit: typo

This has NOT been fixed, as I have discovered it in 21.0.3. I went back to version 21.0.2 but it's still broken. What gives?! Adobe support is useless. Both phone and text chat, it's been a fruitless effort that wrecked my morning and produces only difficult to understand techs that don't listen. Is Adobe giving up on support/listening?

[Edited for super clear phrasing, so that it's understood that the context of "selection" here only refers to the "marching ants" selection- not selecting layers as you would before grouping them. Nevermind that aspect of the term selection at all. It does not apply to this problem.]

Jane, you're missing the point here. It's not about deselecting ["choosing"] a layer, it's using a layer's transparency/pixels to remove/subtract from or intersect with a [marching ants] selection. Traditionally, you ctl+left click on a layer thumbnail to make a [marching ants] selection in the Document window. To add to the [marching ants] selection, say other layers you want to have marching ants to, you hold ctl+shift+left click on those layer thumbnails. So far, so good, right? Those work fine still. HOWEVER: If you want to either use a layer thumbnail to intersect with or subtract from the [marching ants] selection: Say you have a leather jacket on a layer, and above it you have a layer for buttons on the jacket. You want to tint the jacket but not the buttons, on a non-destructive layer that you want placed above all layers. You ctl+left click the jacket layer icon in the layer panel, which results in a marching ants selection. Now you want to remove the buttons from that [marching ants] selection. Traditionally (and we're talking decades, literally, of using Photoshop here- I've been a game dev for 24 years, so believe me when I say this is a new problem) you ctl+alt+left click the THUMBNAIL of the layer in the layer panel. The good news? It still MOSTLY seems to subtract from the [marching ants] selection as intended, but it ZOOMS INTO THE LAYER. This is very jarring, and really wrecks a workflow. Is this making sense? If not, I'll actually construct a GIF so it's finally clear. Nobody in support seems to be getting this, and it's super bizarre that it's getting overlooked so completely. It's also bizarre that so many are griping about it and the devs are parading solutions to a completely unrelated issue. I finally found a workaround, where, after I select a layer, I then right-click a layer thumbnail and choose Add/Subtract/Intersect Transparency Mask.

Can devs PRETTY PLEASE make it so we can disable this alt click to zoom in? It's CRAZY annoying and is destroying workflows!!

Lets be equally clear. No-one on this thread is an Adobe developer or an Adobe employee. If you want to get your issue in front of  developers you need to raise it here:

Can we please please please please have the option to disable the alt+click 'zoom to layer content' function?
I see absolutely no use for it, and it is really really damaging my work-flow. I use layer masks all the time, and when I accidentally click just next to my mask, my whole document zooms and bounces all over the place. I have no time for it.
Please let me just tick a box in preferences to turn it off.
Thank you!

Personally I don’t find it that disruptive but I agree that being able to turn it off might be beneficial.

Yeh, I completely understand that it wont' disrupt everyone. It could just be the way I work, but just the option would be great 😉

I was about to start a new subject!
Oh boy, Me too!
I'm a working professional with illustration and product retouch workflows - the keyboard shortcuts for working with layer masks - adding, combining, subtracting are key to 50% of all my time and unexpectedly zooming without recourse is a huge pain-in-the-@ss! I can imagine new users without a lot of history enjoying that feature - especially on the iPad version, but established Pros need options!!!

The issue is not fixed. I have 21.1 and as far as I can tell there is no way to turn this featue off. Everytime I create a clipping mask it zooms to the layer. This is a very undesireable feature. Just give us an option to turn it off.

So if you press alt and click a layer on accident or trying to do something else, it zooms in full screen to that layer. Collapse folder and zoom in is literally a few pixels difference. This is the most annoying feature I've ever seen added. Whoever suggested or OKd that feature should be put on a raft and pushed out to sea!

So, how do I disable this? I didn't see a shortcut to turn off. I'm tired of contastantly having to zoom out to 100% when it zooms in. I want to zoom in ONLY when I want to which I don't do that often. And there are plenty of ways to do this already! Why combine it sloppily and as a hidden feature next to a workflow that already exists for a lot of people?

There is no way to turn it off at the moment. You could request that function: https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

Hi Michael,

have the same issue, but just to mention: If you do a lot of that stuff, you can't beat alt-click with any navigating to any or selecting right-click menues which costs far more time to do then.

For anyone interested, the Windows equivalent is Ctrl + Alt + G🙂

This is usually the case for modifier key shortcuts between the two:

Command = Ctrl

Option = Alt

(Yay for interchangability!)

Can't wait for them to implement a toggle on settings so I can disable this...

Any update on this?

I've started using PS CC 2019 again, because of the assorted issues of the newer versions…

I agree and it drives me crazy too. The hit box for this behavior always gets triggered unintentionally. A lot of us use clipping layers all the time and it's really frustrating when suddenly your canvas accidentally jumps.

Agree 100%. I like the idea of the feature, but the implementation really annoys me. I don't understand why they choose the alt key.

Hi! I have version 22.43 and there's still no fix for the unwanted zoom-to-layer content. Please, I really don't want this feature. Just let me know how I can turn it off, please! I've checked "Known Issues" and it's not in there.

PLEASE, this is a real problem since it gets in the way for when I want to alpha-lock layers to a specific layers and I always manages to zoom in on that layer when I don't want to.

You will have my eternal thanks if you can fix this unwanted layer zoom in-feature.

Still no update? I'd *really* apreciate an option to turn this off.

And while you're at it, also give me the option where ctrl+Opt+click outside the canvas still allows me to resize my brush, instead of bringing up this useless dialog:

Screenshot 2023-02-03 at 10.05.36.png

I literally *never* want to change this color on the fly.
