P: Allow simple maths in number fields.

So if I want my canvas to be 43px smaller I can basically type 160-43. Or if I want it to be 2.5x bigger I can do 160x2.5.
Any number field can benefit from this. Very often I have to open the calculator to figure out numbers.

It would be very convenient if Adobe Photoshop could do simple calculations in it's input field. E.g type 768*2 in a field, and the software makes it 1536. Most other software does this, but PS lacks this user friendly way of inputting.

Basic math in the canvas size dimension fields would be a big help for me. I frequently have to extend images for designers by taking measurements from InDesign with the ruler tool and have to reach for the calculator. Can't do two decimal places in my head!

BTW, even if I'm strongly in favor of basic math, I'd like to point out that Canvas size has had for a long time a way to add or reduce documents with + or minus operators: click on "relative", then enter the value you'd like to increase your document to, or -{value} to reduce it by that value. Way less intuitive than basic math, I know, but still it exists.

Thank you, that addresses my needs perfectly. I had no absolutely no idea that functionality existed. Mind you I've only been using it for 20 years 🙂 RTFM to me then. Thanks again.

check "Relative" and put 4,11 in the "width" field...I understand the need for division and multiplication, but for addition and subtraction, well, there is the checkbox for that...

It would be great to add a small calculator in the : document size and and canvas size windows. As for people who work a lot with game graphics it would be much easier to calculate animation sequence size etc. rather than open calculator and do all the math there.

Please please please add a math function to input fields in Photoshop just like InDesign and Illustrator works. Meaning that you can for example write "1024*2" in say the canvas input field and as you tab it calculates that to "2048". Thank you!

I would really like it if you could type equations into the 'Canvas Size' dialog box the way you can most other measurement fields in Photoshop. For example, if I want to increase my canvas measuring 1582 px by an additional 135 pixels, I could just type add '+135' to the current field value so the entry in the field would be '1582+135'.

In the special case of Canvas size: just click the Relative checkbox, then type in the number you wish to add or subtract.

Where's the outcry from web developers on this feature? Or game developers?
The list of uses for this very practical feature goes on and on.. and is used for such in other Adobe apps. It boggles my mind that this request has gone without attention for another year. I've taken to bringing in raster assets to illustrator to position them with pixel accuracy, because Illustrator has this feature. I can move an item x pixels over and y pixels down with ease, where in photoshop you're stuck setting up an elaborate array of guides and hoping the snapping feature doesn't get in your way. It's time for photoshop to have basic math in ALL numeric entry fields. You'd think this would be an easier feature to add than the elaborate new smart guides, which are still rather clunky IMO.

The fact that you have to check a box to enable this when the same software company has solved in a way simpler and more intuitive way (i.e. there should be no patent issues) is unfathomable and beyond ignorant from a UX perspective. Or maybe I am beyond ignorant in understanding just how difficult this would be to add to Photoshop?

In comment to the original request post, I am of the opinion that multiplication should be written "160*2.5" (to quote the example) in order to be consistent with other Adobe apps that has this functionality.

Would it be possible to implement number value fields in Photoshop which can accept simple math formulas, such as 100/2 or 44*3 ?

Perhaps it's a little esoteric, but It's a feature I've come to rely on lots in other software (eg Modo by The Foundry). I've come across lots of times when I'd find it useful - recently using Filters such as Offset for fixing tiled pattern joins, creating and transforming Live shapes. I used to need it often when placing guides numerically, but thanks to the recent CC update the new Create Guides options do the job perfectly.

I would love if all numeric fields they could count as a calculator. E.g. I have a 90 mm width of the canvas and I want to extend from each side about 7 mm. Ergonomic way: "90 + 7 * 2". Of course they could be more complex things that are wrong counting from heads. E.g. x position of ninth in a series of items, including spaces. E.g. "100 + 9 * (40 + 10)" in number input for a new guideline.

For example, CINEMA 4D can do this.

Examples:
1500+50 results in 1550
1500-300 results in 1200
1500*3 results in 4500
1500/2.5 results in 600

Support for multiple additions/subtractions if you need to take many sizes of images/etc into account for example:
1500+50+30+10+50..

Could also work with percent
250+20% results in 300

Saves work from doing the math manually

Canvas size already has a relative option that can add or subtract quite easily.

It would be awesome if the number input fields could do simple arithmetics to speedup design process; adding, subtracting, multiplications, etc. Such as the font size or line height fields would allow 27+64, and upon hitting "return" the result would replace the expression to 91px (or default metric).

Use case for ui designers: to quickly prototype web box-model elements in psd could type 26+4*2+3*2 for the height of a shape object to represent a web element that is "height: 26px with margin: 4px and padding: 3px".

Not all designers are good at math.

The title says it all.

Simple. Maths. In. Numeric. Fields.

Every 3D software does it, After effects does it plus many more. We should have had this years ago.

Example, I have 37 degrees rotation selected but I want to halve that:
I type 37/2 in the rotation field.

Example, I have 1326 pixels wide in image size but I want 25%.
I type 1326/4 in the field. Quicker than changing the pulldown to percentage.

Example, I create a new document at A4 but want 20 less pixels in the height.
Type 297-20 in the height field.

And so on......

Round up to the nearest integer in cases where you need deal with whole numbers (like document pixel amounts).

Dear Adobe,

I can see this topic was started 4 years ago.

Is there a technical reason it can't be done, or it's too difficult or take too long to code?

Would be great to hear an official response.

Having a similar feature in a single isolated dialog box is NOT what we're asking for here, and your comments thus far have been far less that constructive.

I'll point out again here that having this feature in a sort-of round-a-bout way in one dialog, the Canvas size dialog, isn't what we're asking for in this thread.
