P: Numeric text fields should ignore errant text input

Here's what I mean... First Photoshop, then Illustrator, but as far I can recall, it applies to the entire suite of software.  Haven't used other apps in a few months.

So, if I click and highlight inside the text size box, and miss the “t” as shown here on the left, type in a number so I end up with something like “25.5t” and hit enter, then I get the error message below.  That’s understandable, because what’s 25.5t?  

The box however should be smart.  Being a programmer too, I recognize that it’s a simple fix, and that’s partly why it bugs me even more.

It should know to ignore the “t” altogether.  Alternatively, the suffix/measuring system--this case being points (”pt”)--could be independently right-aligned in the box and maybe in a slightly different color.  It only changes if you type in another type of suffix, meaning it's not part of the field value unless you change it by manually typing it in after your new number.

There are more ways to achieve this but the bottom line is that the field box should be smarter.  It’s just supposed to be the best software and this is such a simple thing.  This goes for all fields with suffixes.  If more than one suffix is allowable, then the assumption should be that you wanted the same one if there is any text left over when you enter a new value.

I believe everyone experiences this and it's not really hard to fix.  

Illustrator, for it’s part, simply ignores the input if you manage to highlight part of the suffix as shown here.  If you enter anything in this case and end up with “200x”... then it just ignores you like you did nothing.  It should instead recognize that you entered 200.

Hi Mark,

What product and context are you talking about.  If you mean Text Fields, most people probably don't want to wipe out the existing setting, nor is blanking the field typical software behavior.  I'd like to understand your concern better.  Could you clarify?
