Clone tool not pasting (PS CC 20.0.4) - what rooky mistake am I making

I'm strugging with use of the clone and heal brushes. Am using Photoshop CC 20.0.4.

Suspect I am making some basic mistake.

I've working in a new layer, which is unlocked. I select area to be cloned, using smallish brush size (+/- 20).

Alt-click. Circle appears. I move cursor (with a left click) onto the part of the image to which I want to paste and the cloned area appears in that area inside the brush, but it doesn't actually paste or 'paint' onto the area to be covered up.

What am I doing wrong?

From training vides it seems that when I drag the clone tool onto the new area it should paste automatically once I left click on the mouse and hold down.

Suggestions very welcome.

For the Healing Tool, "Sample all Layers" should be checked on in the top options bar. Clone Tool is set to "Current Layer", "All Layers" is in the drop-down menu of the Clone Tool Options bar.

Thanks for the pointer. Seems to have done the trick. Indeed, was on current layer.
