How Do You Change Resolution Without Changing Image Size? [To create hi res screenshots]

I don't know what I did, but suddenly (in the middle of the work day) I can no longer change the image resolution without changing the width and height. My objective is to change the image resolution from 96 ppi to 300 ppi without changing the image size. I was able to do this with the following process (which I've been using for months):

1. Go to Image > Image Size.
2. Clear the Resample check box.
3. In the Resolution text field, type in 300.
4. In the Width text field, type in the original dimension.
5. Click OK.

But now, when I type in the original Width, the Resolution changes back. I've tried resetting the Preferences, but can't seem to find what I did to cause this.

Are you sure you checked »Resample«?

Upsampling from 96ppi to 300ppi seems fairly steep, may I ask what it’s for?

It's very simple: you can't change resolution and keep the dimensions, and not resample.

That is a resampling operation, pure and simple. And as cp said, a fairly extreme one, which is probably not going to look very good.

I need to be able to generate high rez screen shots. But I've yet to find anything on the web that tells me how to do that. I'm capturing with SnagIt, which no longer has a resolution setting. Any suggestions?

Solved: I discovered that I can use Windows PrintScreen to create a new project in PhotoShop. This allows me to set the Resolution at 300 ppi and Background Contents set to Black. Then I just need to crop the image, Save As a PNG, and send it to Marketing. They are happy with the results, so I'm good to go.

If you must upsample, try "nearest neighbor" instead of "bicubic". Here's a standard screenshot upsampled from 72 to 300:
