Photoshop CS4 brush lag with wacom tablet

I've upgraded to photoshop CS4 extended recently and all my brushes that worked fine under CS3 are now with a real lag.

I've installed the latest version of photoshop ( Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 update ) and the latest update for my wacom tablet, but the lag remains.

My computer is a new "24 imac:

-  2,66 GHz intel Core 2 duo processor

-  4 GB memory

-  NVIDIA GeForce 9400

I use my tablet and photoshop a lot, but with this lag it's terrible to draw..

Is there someone who can help me with this or has the same problems ?

thanks in advance

Anything new with this thread? Another one related to brush lag in cs5 seems to have come to nothing. My issues were with intermittent lag with cs3 and cs4. Also have painter X on this computer and do not have brush lag with that.  Nothing problematic with illustrator. Anything new?

Turn off OpenGL rendering in your Preferences->Performance. Close Photoshop and then run again. Sometimes the setting doesn't stick so check it before continuing. The lag should go away.

Hi Mike,

I just wanted to say thank you so much for your post.  I'd tried a bunch of other things that people had recommended on the internet like turning off "Pen Flicks" and "Hold for right click feature in windows" and none of it worked.  I finally came across this thread and viola, turning off the OpenGL did the trick.

Thanks again!

Glad I could be of service.

Speaking of services, if you are running Vista or Windows 7 (not XP) you should turn off tablet services too. They automatically start if you install a Wacom driver on these Os'es, and they can also cause hiccups and lag in Photoshop CS4.

You have to be logged in with admin privleges.

Go to Control Panel->System and Security->Administrative Tools->Services

Open 'Tablet PC Input Service'

Stop the service and select 'Disabled' as the startup type.

You'll know you got it because the annoying 'ripple' effect will go away when you touch the pen to the tablet, and the pop-up keyboard will go away. Of course, if you actually are running on a tablet PC then don't do this.

I just pulled out my Wacom 4 and downloaded the newest driver. I get into CS4 and there's a lag. A quick google search lands me on this page. Any luck?

I'm on a 24" iMac as well.

I slid my double slider all the way down, and that seems to have fixed my lag. Thanks.

Can somebody possibly help me out here? I'm having this same lag issue with both my old graphire3 and my current bamboo tablets since I just upgraded from Photoshop 7 to CS4 today. However, I'm not on a mac, I'm on a PC, so my screen doesn't fully match up to the one posted above, and I cannot seem to locate the necessary slider to fix the lag issue. Would anybody know where I should go to fix this?

Another thing which can slow down drawing will be the brush "distance".

(in the german version this is called "Abstand"):

At 0% photoshop will be much slower.

I usually work with a value greater than 3%.

which tablet do you use?

A Bamboo fun A5 tablet. I have installed the latest version (driver 5.1.0-3) of it.

Do you have the problem somewhere else too? Maybe the PS4 installation have created some (system-)problems?

(I never heard about this problem. I'm using a Graphire4 XL, Intuos3, Cintiq12wx and have no problems or ever had one)

I have also experienced a lag which went away when I set the double click distance for the pen to 0 in the Wacom preferences.

I have changed the double click distance for the pen, but the lag remains.

Even when I change the performance preferences in photoshop to 100% memory usage.

But thanks for the recommendation !

Try enabling the DisableVMBuffering.plugin.  Make sure the ~ForceVMBuffering.plugin is disabled. Put the ~ in front of the file name.

In which folder is the DisableVMBuffering.plugin ? I assume it must be in the Plug-ins folder of the Adobe Photoshop CS4 folder by applications,

but I can't find the correct plugin.

Thanks in advance
