Out of nowhere I can't open jpegs to edit. Instead I see a panel
headed up 'New' and whatever option I select, it opens up with no
image, although the title is correct. I've tried several. However, opening a
'recent' image, does display OK? Any ideas how to solve please?

New anything creates a new blank canvas. Use file>open. If that doesn't work (the software is 20 years old)- time to get the latest version.

Thanks Glenn, I am using file>open and arrive as described. Prior to this, I did always see the image
before. I guess you're referring to Adobe Photoshop Elements 2022|Standard|PC/Mac|Disc which is
appx £77 at amazon? I on;y need basic usage ..... clone stamp tool and merge images

What version of windows are you using?
Sounds like there is something in the way the jpegs were saved that pse 2 doesn't like.
Is it possible you can attach one of the problem jpegs here on the forum so we can try it in pse 2 and more modern pse versions?
If you open one of the jpegs in Windows Paint and resave, does that open in pse 2 without any issues?

Hi Jeff
Re your first comment, they've opened OK before but now are resisting!
Windows 10 Home
Tried with Paint and same problem
It's a pretty basic jpeg but I attach an example as you suggest (couldn't see 'attach'
option so plumped for Insert Image

You can only see attach image if your using the internet browser on your computer.
Are the jpegs on your boot drive or an external drive?

I would reset the pse 2 preferences by going to
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop\Elements
and deleting the
Photoshop Elements 2.0 Prefs folder
On windows 10 the AppData folder is hidden

No joy I'm afraid Jeff ......... did as you said, deleted
Photoshop Elements 2.0 Prefs folder
but with several images, they won't 'open easy' to allow edit, instead
I still see that pesky panel, headed up 'New'
