Photoshop Elements 2018 memory problems - unable to edit and save files

I have a reasonably powerful computer (Intel I7-4790K 4Ghz, 32Gb RAM, a minimum of 165 Gb of free disk space on each of my three drives, and Win 10 Pro 64 bit v1709_16299.19), I am working 100% ok with a range of programs (including other photo apps) so I don't believe the problem is with my computer.

Photoshop Elements 2018 is currently completely unusable as I am unable to edit and save files (eg raw and jpgs).

Example 1: I can open a canon raw file in ACR and make the desired adjustments, I then click open image to transfer to photoshop. Very often I'm content with the raw development and just want to save the file as a psd or jpg. For PSD > I do file save as, type a name, click save, and get an error pop-up box "Could not save as path\xxxx because there is not enough memory (RAM)". The xmp sidecar file is created. For JPG > I enter the name and get the "jpg option" box, I select max quality / lowest compression and get an error pop-up box "Photoshop Elements 2018 Editor has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". I click OK, the msg box disappears, and Win 10 shows no notifications.

Example 2: I open a jpg file, make a few adjustments (eg levels, contrast, haze removal) and do file save as, and get the error pop-up box "Could not save as \...\xxxx.jpg because there is not enough memory (RAM)". Even trying to save as a jpg with the lowest quality throws up the same error msg box. I have to do OK to the error msg box and close the file without saving. Viewing task manager whilst the program is running (with a 3.2 Mb jpg open) shows that 108.6 Mb RAM is used by PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe, with only 13% of the total available RAM used by all running processes.

I suspect the problem is to do with the PS Elements 2018 memory settings - particularly RAM, however I am unable to access the preferences > performance section to make any changes.

I can open and adjust every "preferences" section (apart from performance) and the program remains responsive - General, Saving files, Scratch disks, Display & cursors, Transparency, Units & rulers, Guides & grid, Pug-ins, Adobe partner services, Application updates, Type, Country/region selection.

However as soon as I click the performance section I get a msg box "An integer between 50 and 8 is required. Closest value inserted". I then click OK to close it (it pops up twice each time), and from then on I can no longer access the other preferences sections as the same msg keeps popping up. I have to close and re-open the preferences box to access the other areas.

So how can I amend the performance settings and hopefully get the program working correctly? If I can't use the built-in tools is there a way of manually editing a file that stores the performance settings? Where is the preferences file located? As a test I could make a change in one of the other preferences sections and see whether the file updates (ie are the write/edit permissions ok etc).

So far I have:

1. Uninstalled, rebooted and re-installed the program

2. I did ctrl+alt+shift when starting Photoshop to delete the settings file

3. I deleted the folder C:\Users\UserID\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements and rebooted

4. I have run from an admin command prompt - c:\Windows\System32>sfc /scannow - with no problems, and the event logs show "Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems. No further action is required".

5. I have used Adobe application manager to check for updates and my system is up-to-date. I have updated to Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw v10.0.0.827.

None of the above actions resolved the problem and I am still unable to open the performance settings, and cannot edit and save files.

My PC, the OS and all other programs are working correctly without any problems. I believe the problem lies with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018. Re-installing the OS and all other programs is not an option for me - I would like Adobe to fix the product by releasing an update, or assist me to make a fix and get my paid for software working.

Doing a search on the internet and the Adobe site shows that I am not the only person experiencing this type of problem.

The fix information is from Adobe, although it has something to do with Windows 10 changes after the software was released:

read it in the forum.

You are right, it came with the last upgrade of Windows 10.

I would have liked to tell it but I didn't saw any place to say that

this last upgrade was a pain in the ... because of a number of problems

generated with applications.

Ceci dit, il est vrai que le dernier update Windows est en cause. Mais comme Adobe a nos mails à tous, il serait de bon ton de nous prévenir du genre : "il y a un bug, soyez patients on travaille dessus".

Absolutely correct! Adobe should have notified all WIN 10 Photoshop customers that there was a potential problem, and when they had a solution all WIN 10 Photoshop customers should have been notified of it.

I now have the same problem with Ram in Elements 14 and the above instructions haven't fixed the problem, when I had this problem some time ago it worked fine.

This is what I get:

"Could not import the clipboard as there is not enough memory (Ram)"

This happened after I reset preferences on exiting programme as the Background/Foreground box wasn't changing when I tried to create

an oval vignette.

Cela ne marche pas pour vous. ok, compris.

Petit rappel:

- la solution détaillée par ssprengel est toujours là dans cette discussion, mais elle est noyée par le flot de nouveaux commentaires.

- elle fonctionne dans la plupart des réponses

- rien ne prouve qu'elle ait été correctement appliquée dans tous les autres cas.

- il y a des cas où cela n'a pas marché, et où le contrôle de l'ordinateur à été pris par Adobe (et même par Microsoft); Il s'est avéré qu'il y avait en plus d'autres problèmes qui ont pu être résolus.

- Les problèmes signalés sont divers et ne sont apparus qu'après la mise à jour de Windows... sauf que le problème de mémoire lui-même existait depuis des mois sur quelques ordinateurs avec des configs musclées (différentes versions d'Elements).

- D'après mes observations sur d'autres forums, il semble que la majorité des utilisateurs d'Elements n'aient pas ce problème, comme moi (mémoire 8GB).

- Les symptômes et messages d'erreur sont différents même si la cause supposée de la taille de RAM est commune ainsi que la solution du registre.

- Les problèmes avec le format jpeg peut être confondu avec un autre bug plus ancien.

- Le problème de mémoire existe aussi sur Photoshop, la solution est la même.

- Différentes versions d'Elements sont touchées, avec il me semble des symptômes un peu différents.

- Un autre bug ennuyeux est apparu en même temps avec la mise à jour de Windows (les fenêtres flottantes réduite à la dimension timbre poste). Rien à voir et pas de vraie solution à part désactiver cette préférence d'interface.

Il me semble donc que pour être utiles à la collectivité, les utilisateurs qui ont encore des problèmes devraient spécifier des informations permettant de savoir pourquoi leur cas est différent des autres utilisateurs comme moi.

- taille de RAM

- Informations système (menu Aide)

- type de disque (SSD?)

- configuration des disque de travail (scratchdisks)

- etc.

ssprengel that's brilliant it worked on photoshop elements 15. Came back home on 27th May had the integer problem that a number of between 50 and 8 was required. Also green bars kept coming up on every stage I done like image size and crop etc etc. anyway followed your tutorial and now sorted today the 29th May

Hi, when I go into HKEY_CURRENT_USER I have a list of things but not photoshop elements. Where do I look for it??? as It is on my desktop screen...…….Think I'm going to struggle with this as I'm not computer savy.

Is it a Microsoft Store version?

Otherwise, Photoshop Elements is under:

- Software

- Adobe.

I am suffering from the same issue described here. However, my version of Elements 2018 is from the Microsoft store. I suspect that this is why I don't have an entry in the registry under: hkey current user > software > adobe.

Is anyone aware of a fix for this version? I have the same symptoms described elsewhere in the thread, i.e. the out of memory (RAM) message and the other message about an integer is required between 50 and 8 is required when trying to open the performance section of the preferences menu.

I'm happy with the process for adding values to the registry, just not sure where to apply it in my case, which is frustrating as it seems to be a known issue with a fix for other instances.

There is a note about this in the help doc:

Error: An integer between 50 and 8 is required | Elements | Windows 10

Note:

If you have installed Photoshop Elements from Windows App Store, then you will not have the above-mentioned folder structure. You must create the specified folder structure within HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\

folder in your registry. The Photoshop Elements version number depends on the product’s version installed on your system. For example, for 2018 the folder name should be 16.0, for version 15 the folder name should be 15.0, and for version 14 the folder name should be 14.0.

This is again what worked for me:

The registry fix that worked for me:

Be very, very careful using Regedit.

Ensure PhotoShopElements 2018 (or 14.1 for me) (and all other applications) is closed when using regedit.

Run regedit (in Win 10: Click on the search circle. Type regedit – then select Regedit Run Command)

go to: hkey current user > software > adobe

in that list find photoshop elements and click on the version number (14 for me)

Double click on OverridePhysicalMemoryMB

change Base to decimal and then enter enter 8000 (eg 8000 MB for 8 GB RAM) (Maybe if you don’t have this much RAM set to 4000)

Click ok and close regedit
