3D Text Colour in Photoshop 2020??

New Here ,
Jan 13, 2020 Jan 13, 2020

I am having issues changing the text colour in Photoshop 2020. I write out a text, then create a 3D extrusion or convert it to 3D essentially, but then the colour changes from my original colour. I try to change the colour in the character panel but it doesn't work. I'm not sure how to fix this. I've read some previous solutions using diffuse or changing the base layer colour but I can't seem to find these on Photoshop 2020. I'm also quite new to photoshop so I'd appreciate a simple, clear explanation. Thanks.

I use Photoshop on Mac.

When you create 3D text, you are creating an object with the text colour on the surface, lit by the 3D scene lighting. This will look different to the text you started with.

The surface is made with the material properties , one of which is Base Color. If you click on Text front inflation material in the 3D panel then go to properties, you should see this:

So in principle - just change the Base Color by clicking on the square. However, an issue that you may run into is that , following the recent changes to the 3D materials system, 3D in Photoshop is very buggy. A symptom many are hitting is that the GPU preview shows reversed lighting (i.e. shadows are light and highlights dark). When you render it turns out OK but without a preview it is difficult to predict.  Similar symptoms are occuring in the Lighting effects filter which also uses the 3D engine. This is sometimes reset by a Preference rest but does return.

My advice for 3D , until this gets fixed, would be to use an earlier version of Photoshop (you can install V20 alongside v21) or just use a 3D application such as Blender

Thank you for reporting the issue,

I believe the primary issue here is > Backfaces.

  1. From the 3D Panel select the SCENE.
  2. Properties Panel > check Backfaces.

The model should now begin to use the Infinite (and other) lights properly.

Hope this helps with the issue.

Hi Daniel

Thanks for joining in. Removing the backfaces does help with the GPU preview in v21, the render works correctly with or without that checked.

It was not necessary to check that in the previous version though and I'm puzzled why that function (present in many 3D apps) should affect the camera view preview rendering of front faces

V21 remove hidden backfaces unchecked

See also the infinite light reversal in the screenshot below (v21.0.2) (remove hidden backfaces checked)

Compared to V20.0.8 (remove hidden backfaces unchecked and with lighting and preview rendering showing correctly)
