Adobe CS5/CS6 and MS Word Conflict

I have a problem with Adobe CS5 and CS6.  I've had Photoshop CS6 along with Elements 14 operating on the same computer for a long time under the Windows10 Operating system. There was no conflict. I then added CS5 to the same computer and there was a problem. What appeared is that all the MS Word document icons turned into Adobe icons and when you clicked on any of these documents, CS6 was activated. Now when I removed both CS5 and CS6, all was back to normal. Let me add the fact that after CS5 and CS6 were removed, all the MS Word documents came back (i.e. they really were not destroyed). I just couldn't get to them any more. I then removed all programs with an Adobe name attached and added only CS6 back onto the computer. The same problem came back.

Hi Sherrillb,

I believe it's a file association issue, you can change the MS Word document file association from Adobe Icons to Microsoft word. Please have a look here and see if it helps: https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-change-file-associations/

Hi Sherrill,

It sounds like it‘s an operating system issue, not an Adobe issue. You didn’t say if you are on Windows or Mac.

Please confirm your operating system and version, for now I’ll assume Windows.

When your computer sees .pdf, it assumes Acrobat. When it sees .docx, it assumes Word. When it sees .xlsx, it assumes Excel. When it sees .psd, it assumes Photoshop. But sometimes it gets it wrong and you have to correct it, and that’s what happened here. Your computer saw .docx and thought “Adobe”. You didn’t say which Adobe application, and it doesn’t matter.

To fix it, open Windows File Explorer > right-click a Word file > choose Open With... > Microsoft Word > Change All (important).

On a Mac, you use Finder and Get Info to do the same thing.

Thanks Sahil, that was most appreciated. It was a little surprising when all those documents went away. Glad to see them back.
