Background layer color change

I'm an avid user of Fireworks to do most of my grahics work but sometimes I have to use Photoshop for other work. When I do use Photoshop, I have to import images into Firework and use FW to change the final background layer color. The Photoshop background layer default color is white, which is very annying. After consuling with my users manual, the online help tool, and several google searches, iI am unable to find a way to change the background color from white in Photoshop. This is totally bizzare.  In the meantime I have to import everthing into Fireworks making for a clugy workflow. I have CS5 and it seems to me that I should be able to do something as simple as changing the background color.

    Press the 'D' key to set the default foreground/background color, which will be black and white. White will be the background color. You can switch by pressing the 'X' key and the background color will now be Black.

    Thanks for your help but this feature has no effect.I found a workaround creating a new Color Fill layer to achieve background color change. However the "D" and "X" keys still have no effect, even on the new layer. I'm using PS CS5, which maybe has less or different features from previous versions?

    They are not supposed to affect an existing Layer, but the fore- and background-colors as seen in the Tools Box.

    You mean for one file or as a default?

    For one file just select the Layer, choose a background color and command-delete.

    Thanks for your input. I think I have a buggy program because I am unable to apply a different color to my background layer (which is currently stuck on white). I'll try reinstalling. I also noticed that the only background color options Photoshop gives me on the drop down menu is red, orange, yellow, green, bue, violet, gray. Unfortutnalty I wanted a black background against my graphic so I'm back using Fireworks which allows me to easity use any background color I want.

    looks like your selecting the color option in the layer properties - this is for organizing layers by coloring them in the layers panel, this has no effect on any pixels. Have you tried the suggestion in the previous post?

    .... just to be clear, you set your background color by click here (on the background white square in this sample)


    Thanks for the input but this function, as you described has no effect. I found a workaround creating a Color Fill layer to achieve background color change. However, the toggle function you suggest has no affect on any layer with a color background. I also noticed thatI have no way to access the auto alignment feature so you I have to align everything by eye. I think PS CS5 is very buggy so I'm going to hunt for an older version of PS.
