Question

Can I unlink some assets in CC libraries?

I wish to add assets to my Photoshop CC Library that are unlinked and do not sync - ever. Also, I would like some assets to sync and others not to sync. I  cannot find a way to administer syncing for individual assets other then turning it off globally in Creative Cloud app - all assets either on or off.

I do see where the combination of Alt + Clicking when dragging a Library asset into a document removes the cloud linking feature in the case of that particular document. My fear is that forgetting to do that will have negative consequences for other images sharing that asset

An example would be a signature stored in the library that you change the color to suit a particular photo you wish to sign - if the asset is cloud synced all your other photos with the signature will be affected - unknown to you until you open them.

You can right click the linked layer and choose "embed." This way, the layer is embedded in the document instead of synced to the cloud. I believe once it is embedded, you can right click and edit smart object. This way, if you make changes to the layer, it won't affect the file on the cloud.

Thanks A.R. Vue - I do not see the option to embed when right clicking the layer but do see the the option under the menu Layer / Smart Object / Embed Linked or Embed Linked All -  but this would be on a document by document basis and would have to be every time the signature is used. The one time I forget to unlink the signature all my previous work with signatures will change?

I have turned off Syncing / Linking in the Cloud App but the Cloud symbol still shows up in the bottom right corner of every layer from the library

I would really like to ensure that the particular library item could be permanently disabled for linking. I find the library to be very useful but need to take extra steps to ensure linking isn't happening with certain assets

You should be able to see "embed linked" if you right click the layer under the Layers panel.

I believe the only time the linked cloud object will change is if you do an edit to the object itself. For example, if you have multiple files that linked to the smart object on the cloud, and you made a change to the file on the cloud, then it will affect all your other files.

However, if you have the linked object embedded into the project file and you edit the embedded object file, it will not affect all your other projects.

When you copy & paste or drag an item into the project, there should be a checkbox that says, "Add to my current library". If you uncheck that box, the file will be embedded. If you do check that box, the file will be stored to the cloud and the project will be linked to the file on the cloud. Hope that helps.
