Can't remove background color in Photoshop CC '18

Community Beginner ,

Hi. I have a document that was created with a white background and I need to make it transparent. But it's not as simple as isolating my artwork and deleting the white. It seems as though the white isn't a layer or pixels that can be deleted. It's just part of the file. Is there any way to change the "white background" setting of the file to transparent? Or do I have to start a new file with a transparent background and drag my artwork over? Just fyi, my color mode is RGB not indexed. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

If you want to have transparent background for artboard and checkerboard visible then do the following:

  • Select Artboard in the Layers panel
  • Open Window > Properties panel
  • From Artboard background color drop down list choose Transparent.

Thanks for the quick reply, but what if there already is a transparent layer, and no other layers to delete? See screen shot. Not sure if you can tell, but there is a transparency grid in the thumb on layer 1 but I can't get rid of the white on the artboard. I'm sure I must be in some setting I'm not familiar with, but I can't figure out how to change it.

Thank you!!! This is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't want to get rid of the artboard group, just change the background to transparent.

Is there any way to turn off this artboard setting without having to create a new document?

I've spent the last two nights trying to figure out how to change the background from being white to being transparent, and this finally helped. If it wasn't for this forum, I think I'd be bald right now from the frustration haha. Thanks so much!

Never mind, I finally tracked down the view settings that were causing the problem.  Can't figure out how to delete the previous comment.  😕
