Can the blue line around layer/brush mode selection be turned off?

UPDATE:  Nevermind, figured it out.  Once you touch canvas or layer the selection takes effect and blue outline goes away.  Not sure what the purpose of it is in the first place.  -Novice PS user.

Does anyone know how to turn off the blue outline that appears after changing a layer mode or brush selection?   This never used to happen and is rather annoying.  Everytime I make a selection, a blue outline appears and I have to confirm the selection by hitting enter for the selection to take effect.  It adds an unnecesary step to the workflow.  Thanks.
