Hi Guys,

I'm new to photoshop and my skills aren't the best.  I'm looking to create Photo Canvas Mockups.  I've got a jpg and psd file for what I want to create.  I'm running Photoshop cc 2018.

Would it be possible for to be guided through this please?

Thansk

    Hi

You can simulate a photo on canvas by adding a layer above the image. Use Edit >Fill>Pattern and choose one of Artist Surfaces

Set the blend mode of that new layer to Soft Light

You can stop there or you can put both layers into a smart object then transform it and add a rectangle edge and a drop shadow to simulate depth

Thanks Dave, is there a way to do that with a mirrored edge?

    Sure

Just select the image Smart Object then  CTRL+J to copy it then Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal.

Now move the layer above the black edge rectangle and Alt Click on the border between the two layers, in the layers panel, so that copied image clips to the rectangle layer.

Move the top layer to position it then reduce opacity so the black underneath darkens it

What kind of mockup? There are many ways to create templates.  The more complex the harder they are to populate or images have restrictions.  Like if you use Smart Object layers in your template. And repopulate the the smart object content. All replacement objects need to be exactly the same size as the object in the template. For the layers associated transform is not replaced or updated when you replace the objects content.   Even when you do not use smart object layer for you want to be able to use any size image you still need to handle size and aspect ratio miss matches.

Since your new you may want to download some free template PSD files to see how some are designed to be used.

"Photo Canvas Mockups"  to vague you need to have some Idea of the mockup content you need a little more than a blank canvas.

    Sometimes not much more.

    Very simple templat Rules here:

    1. Size the photo collage templates for the print size you want - width, height and print DPI resolution.
    2. Photo collage templates must have a Photoshop background layer. The contents of this layer can be anything.
    3. Photo collage templates must have alpha channels named "Image 1", "Image 2", ... "Image n".
    4. Photo collage templates layers above the background layers must provide transparent areas to let the images that will be placed below them show through.
