Changing the direction of a Brush metal effect

Hello!

I have been researching creating a brush metal effect.

Majority do it the same way, where a radial blur with a strong amount over a gradient does the right thing (and it looks greet).

My problem is the striations (direction go horizontally in everything I try and I want to have the brushed metal effect on a sphere, where the striations are vertical.

The fist picture is the direction they are now, the second shows a very rough set of brush stokes in the direction which I would need to have?

Anyone have any thoughts how to best get a brushed metal stroke effect but vertically on a s[here?

thanks

Either use the radial blur, as you have been doing, but set it to zoom. Or use path blur.
