Charcoal Filter inverted

When I use the charcoal filter on a desaturated image it comes out inverted (negative image) instead of black on white. I'm following a tutorial on youtube and it does not do this in the tutorial have followed the steps exactly. Any suggestions?

Set the Foreground color in the Tools Panel to Black and Background color to White and then try the Charcoal filter.

Press D on the keyboard to set the default tool panels colors to Black foreground and White background.
