Color Range Selector Doesn't Work

My Photoshop CS 6 Color Range Selector stopped working on my iMac  It opens but will not allow me to select anything with the dropper.  The buttons all operate but the selection never happens.  I have the following selected: Sampled Colors, Localized Color Clusters (I have also tried without this selected) image(display) and selection preview= none.  The image is 8 bit but I have tried 16 bit as well.  No selection appears no matter how the fuzziness and range are changed.  If I enter a warning appears: No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible.  I have reinstalled and restarted to no avail. This tool has worked before without a problem.  Any ideas?

Hi

Does your selected layer (in the layers panel) have any pixels?

What are the settings in the options bar?

I have seen this happen when the wrong layer is targeted. If your layer is a shape layer or type layer, no pixels will be selected.
