Constraining the Eraser

Explorer ,

I'm using the eraser tool to wipe out a staff of music, so it needs to move in a straight horizontal line. Shift-E doesn't work. Neither do Alt-E, Ctrl-E, etc. Googled it. Help!

The workaround I've been using is the rectangle tool. Drag out a white rectangle. Gone.

With the Eraser tool click on the beginning of the line.

Then hold down the Shift key and click on the other end of the line.
