Question

edit smart object (created in photoshop after the placement of a vector-based pdf) in illustrator

Hi , I am strungling finding a solution about editing smart objects (created in photoshop, after the placement of vector based pdfs) directly in illustrator.

I used to work before with windows and older versions of photoshop and I was doing the following steps for years :

1-> creation of  a new document in photoshop

2-> go to file-> place ( choose a pdf ,created from a vector programm, like autocad or vectorworks, etc...)

-> press OK  -> enter. The file is added as a new layer and automaticaly converted  to  a 'smart object'

3-> double click on the smart object icon of this layer->  the illustrator is launching in a new window and the smart object opens automaticaly in illustrator as a 'vector smart object'

4-> edit the object in illustrator as usual

5->  close illustrator tab after editing -> appears a window 'save changes before closing' -> press YES -> edited vector smart object is updated automatically in Photoshop.

Currently I am using Adobe 2021 and macintosh:

From step 3 there are issues. When I double click on the smart object icon, the program that is launching is acrobat. When I try to convert the layer to smart object (by right click on layer-> convert to smart object),this object opens as a new tab in photoshop. (Option which I also use but only if I want to edit  raster images).

I haven't found yet any answer in the adobe community that solves my issue.

Thank you in advance for your valuable help

Hi @Vasiliki5E46

It sounds like your computer is seeing the PDF extension and has associated it with Acrobat. You can change the association in two places:

  • Finder > Cmd+I (Get Info)
  • Bridge > Preferences > File Type Associations (try this first)

Is there a reason it needs to be in Photoshop at all? Can you bypass PS and just open and save it in AI?

Hi

I want my pdfs to be associated with the acrobat in my computer. I don’t want to change that.

What I also want is to associate my smart objects (created from vector pdfs )in photoshop with illustrator. It is a function that I have been using a lot before .

Hi Vasiliki,

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? We have been using CS5 for a looooooong time and finally got our hands on CS 23, but some of the best funtions of CS5 seems gone... Frustrating.

Kind regards,

Peter

Before you place them in PS, can you open them in IA, then save as an IA file, rather than a pdf?

If I change the extentions of all my exported pdfs that I want to place in photoshop (from pdf to ai) then yes indeed it works. But this is not a solution, we are talking about lots of pdfs which I have to convert manually .

Note: The pdfs I want in general to be associated with acrobat, so I dont want to change that association
