Erasing in a straight line

Is it possible to use the eraser (or perhaps another tool) to erase in a straight line (rather than freehand)? I have an image that I need to make a series of erasures...take away straight line segments of the image.

I keep finding how to "erase a straight line" on the internet but they are only discussing how to erase or clear a straight line just drawn...not what I am after.

If there is a way (I was hoping I could use the eraser tool and press the shift key or something) I would very much appreciate the help. I do not want to make long, skinny selection tool boxes and clear them, if that makes sense! Thanks.

    Thank you all for helping me out. It seems simple enough now that I know what to do but I couldn't find anything in Help so went to the forum.

    Use the Pen tool to crate a path, then select the Eraser tool, and press Enter to stroke the path with the Eraser.

      Shift key. Click once (beginning of the line). Now press shift, and with it held down, click again (end of the line).

        I was trying the shift key first and wasn't working.

        Is there a way, like in cad software, to hold a key to make a horizontal, vertical or 45 degree line so one isn't eyeballing what is straight and not having to set up a grid???

        Shift key method works on vertical, horizontal and 45 degree angles, so it may be exactly what you want.

        If not heres another … locate your LINE tool. U key - its one of the shape tools. Top left of the options bar there are three buttons - One creates paths, second creates vector shape layers, third creates solid filled areas. These are in a sense boxes, but they are controllable easily with weight. Now holding shift again will create straight lines much more easily than using the brush tool.   For erasing you can using this on a mask
