Question

files won't open in Photoshop 2020 from finder

Hi,

I'm on a brandnew Macbook Pro 2020 with Mac OS 10.15.5

When opening files from the finder in Photoshop, Photoshop will open, but the files will not.

Files will only open when opened in Photoshop directly.

Uninstall and fresh reinstall of Photoshop didn't help.

Adobe Photoshop Version: 21.1.3 20200508.r.190 2020/05/08: 73760933ad5 x64

Thank you for your help!

Max

I'm getting a similar situation. Format of the file doesn't seem to matter – PSD, JPG, ARW... all seem to have the same issue. I've narrowed it down a bit and it seems to be that if Finder is in gallery or columns layout (which both give a preview of the image) then it won't open in Photoshop.

The same thing happens in Lightroom, when chosing to edit a photo in Photoshop:
"Edit a copy" or "Edit original" just opens Photoshop, but not the Picture.

"Edit a copy with lightroom adjustments" opens the Picture as it should in Photoshop!

When you select an image in Finder and go to Get Info, what does it say for "Open With"? Are these files PSDs?

the PSDs are set to open with Photoshop, but it also happens with other image-files when chosing "open with -> Photoshop".

Photoshop itself opens, but won't open the file.

That also happens when dragging a file onto the Photoshop Icon on the Dock.

Hi

To confirm the image isn't opening (as opposed to opening, but being off screen), can you try:

  • Right-click a PSD in Finder > Open With > Photoshop 2020

Does the image show in the Layers panel?

Does the image show at the bottom of the Window menu?

You might need to reset Preferences. First backup actions, swatches, shapes, etc., then go to Photoshop > Preferences > General > Reset Preferences on Quit.
